Cool...

Splan8 04-27-2005 02:31 PM

Thanks Alex!

Ok...
Let's get down to business. I am getting us some *free* web space (about 250MB worth) where we can host files, etc... If we need more space, then we'll probably need to start paying. More on that later. Anyone have any ideas for a URL?

"RX8 is enough" weekend event:
I really want to do a big weekend event so that those a bit outside can drive up and have fun. Maybe combine some pieces of these ideas into a big weekend get together... Make it worth the drive for some like Lego and Phlash.
- Mountain Runs with Nabil
- Andretti Karting & tech session (Catered by Jim Ellis in the upstairs lounge & bar)
- Dyno day on a Sunday
- ???

"The 8s do the Autocross" on Sunday may 22nd:
Registration for the next autocross is open. However, we need to decide when we want to run before we sign up... Morning or Afternoon. We should sign up soon, though so lets get a consensus in the next day or two. Morning = onsite a turner field by 8:00 am. Afternoon =onsite by 11:30.

Any other events/activities to plan?

Splan8 04-27-2005 02:34 PM

Oh, you may wish to subscribe to this thread as well.

Splan8 04-27-2005 04:25 PM

Good point. I'll post instructions on what to do to register soon. Please pass word along to all your friends. Remeber there are (supposedly) only 20 novice slots in the afternoon, so we need to be quick on the draw.

Glyphon 04-27-2005 05:08 PM

What about Time Only? do they limit the number of T.O. entries? That could be a fall back for the new autoxers if they miss getting a novice slot.

Splan8 04-27-2005 06:22 PM

Unfortunately no, but honestly, they are a little lax on the novice slots. They want people to come out. I'll shoot them an email letting them know our intentions. The local mini and miata clubs do this from time to time too.

J'sgr8t8 04-27-2005 07:32 PM

I have autoxed before in a different car that was modified and was in the street modified class. I know B stock allows some mods like exhaust and bars but they say nothing of air intakes. I was wondering if this mod alone will put me into Street modified.

L8APEX 04-27-2005 07:32 PM

I like the idea of doing the whole weekend thing. That sound good.

As for the Autocross, I may have to come and be the Photo guy. Not too keen on using a helmet that has had some other sweaty dude in it, and a new one is a couple hundred. Hopefully by the next one I can work the helmet in, right now I want that exhaust off Charlies car.

But I would be glad to do the photo part, anyone have a video cam they want to use too?

There are lots of rules for all classes, but to summarize your predicament, I believe you are in STU class now. Airbox, rear sway, springs will each put you there. But it's a good class if you like to modify a car.

I am sure we could scare up a helmet from someone, maybe someone with a bike helmet. Snell 95 or better is all that is required.

As for vid cams, several of us have "MAZCARE VID-MOUNT 2000" camera mounts in the car, but... if you don't I am sure we can get with Charlie for a few more additions... :)

Splan8 04-27-2005 09:15 PM

More autocross info

Sound Control:
This year there is a noise limit. 95db measured from several yards away from the track. There has only been one car to exceed that so far. If you do exceed, you can't run again that race until you do something to address it. Just be aware that passing tech may require you to do a test run for that reason. No biggie.

Rules:
The SCCA rules are finally online this year. If you just want to have fun, you don't need to read this. If you are more serious, you can get them here .

You should bring:
$35
Driving shoes and comfy shoes.
Some painters tape to tape up your number
Something to snack on and drink
Cap
Your car with everything loose removed (change, floormats, etc...)
Tire guage (or borrow one from someone else)

We should collectively bring:
A tent we can put up and some chairs to sit in
A cooler

Go here to sign up... Afternoon Novice please. When it asks for your name, please give them your first name and last initial. When it asks for a sponsor, please put GA RX8 Club so they will know we are all together.

I wouldn't really do that. I would instead use your first name and last initial. This successfully addresses any concerns about warranty/insurance coverage but still allows the announcer and safety staff to do their job.

Splan8 04-27-2005 10:21 PM

Yeah, I saw that :)
I sent an email to the folks that run the events and let them know we were planning to attend and would probably be giving partial names. I'll let you know what they say.

Splan8 04-28-2005 09:19 AM

Score 1 for Nabil...

OK...

So here is my email and the reply from the SCCA guys:

To ATL SCCA SOLO2 guys:
RE: RX8 Club of Ga attending May 22nd autocross

We are still small, 10-15 people max and several may not show... But,
the group would like to attend the May 22nd afternoon session, largely
as novices.
I just wanted to mention this, so that you were aware of the intention
and could maybe allow for any increase this creates in the novice run
groups.

Also, the RX8Club.com message boards have been speckled with "Mazda
refuses warranty" and "insurance co refuses coverage" type of posts.
Several in the club would like to address this by not giving their full
name. If that poses an issue for the event, please let me know how we
can handle that better and still address their anonymity conerns.

Dear "Bob",
We would be delighted if you and your "jaguar" driving friends would
come and race with us. We are aware that "Jane", "Dick", "Robert",
"Jim" and "Earl" will also be bringing their "jaguars" to race in the
SCCA Solo2 program. Especially since you will first run as novice
class drivers in the program, the make/model of your "jaguar" is not
important to us. Once you complete 2 events and begin running in class,
we will need to be sure your car is ACTUALLY in the right class with the
rest of the "jaguars", but that's not a concern for now.

WELCOME! Hope to see you then. Oh yeah, I hope you enjoy the "racing".

The second reply

Travis,
That last message was all in humor, directed to everybody. BUT
seriously, we are glad you can come race. I do recommend that instead
of first names, you may consider making them up, along with making up
the CAR TYPE as well. We have heard a few things about Mitzu and Suburu
looking around these results and 'notifying' people of a warranty
change.

I recommend made up names and made up car types. (thus the jaguar). That
should pretty much cover you guys.

Gosh, what a world we live in. Somebody can't buy something and use it
for the purpose it was intended..... :(

Welcome, and let me know if we can do anything for you. You need to be
SURE and go thru the registration process the RIGHT WAY just like
everybody else. Please let me know if your friends need any more advice
on covering their tracks.

My car is so far out of warranty that it isn't a concern to me but I'm
glad to support you.

L8APEX 04-28-2005 09:25 AM

At least he has a good sense of humor about it, I laughed pretty good at his first reply.

I am still going to try and do this, we will see how finances work out. Convincing the wife to be that I need a racing helmet is proving harder than expected. ;)

derwankel 04-28-2005 09:29 AM

You can use it for other purposes as well ... you'll probably need it when she gets mad at you. :)

Can also be used for remodeling ... taking out walls ... knocking down small trees ... 1000s of uses ... ya just gotta "sell" it. :D

Splan8 04-28-2005 09:34 AM

My suggestion is to go ahead and sign up now. That's not a real commitment it jsut reserves you a spot. You don't pay until you race, so there is no $ asked for during the registration process.

L8APEX 04-28-2005 09:35 AM

Or I end up buying her something that cost more than the helmet, just to make up for my "hobby".

Back on track, who else is going to do the autocross?

And does anyone have a preference on doing the weekend that "the other travis" mentioned? When is good for you guys, and when is bad. Almost any weekend is good with me. The weekend of the 28th of may is bad for me. Something about a wedding.

-travis #2

Splan8 04-28-2005 09:43 AM

A weekend in June would be good.

I have autocross activities on the 4th-5th and then again the 17th - 19th. Otherwise, I think I am good...

We could check with Andretti to see if they have a good weekend for a group outing as well. Probably anytime is fine with them, though.

L8APEX 04-28-2005 09:50 AM

For June, I get married on the 4th, and then I am in Hawaii form the 5th through the 12th. Other than that I am good.

Spyder_doo 04-28-2005 09:51 AM

95 db, huh I guess i'll just have to see if mine is too loud. :D How many people are planning on going so far? I'll be there if my rims and tires ever show up. I've been waiting on them for over a month now. I might have to go get some tires put on my stock rims just to do this stuff.

Jamie

Spyder_doo 04-28-2005 10:14 AM

I just signed up and by the looks of it there's only 2 RX-8s listed right now along with a older GTi and a civic SI. Oh, this is probaly a stupid question but do you have to have a drivers license to race there?

Thanks,
Jamie

Spyder_doo 04-28-2005 10:43 AM

Ok guys, what days are we considering for the dyno day? Can I have more info on this? I also have a few friends that said they'd be all over this if we let them dyno with us.

Jamie
