Of course, I am in for this. I think it is the next logical step for us. I am really liking the ideas that we have been throwing around, for our own page on the club site, and a good place to store all of our photos and videos.

Lets make this happen.

also, it needs to be discussed how much space each member gets. 5gigs is a lot, but when video starts getting mentioned, it quickly becomes not as much. also, there needs to be space allocated for the official site. and also space allocated for future members.

also bandwidth is something that needs to be considered. if everyone is hosting 100meg videos, and linking to various boards, bw can get used up really quick.

Dont get your hopes up but I'm seeing if work will allow me to use a host server for the club. We have three service providers and have tons of bandwidth and hard drive space at my disposal. I'll let you know if it gets approved. Till then lets still make this our #1 option.

I guess I'm on - although I don't see why we're doing a pay-for type of membership. Sponsorship works well, and we have this site here to use, so why are we insisting on deviating? I guess maybe I've not read enough over the last few weeks, and not kept up - if that's the case I apologize.

RedLine, I have no problem with a sponsorship. Do you know someone that would like to sponsor us and not want to put their ad at the top of the page? I'd love for us to not have to pay for membership.

What brought this to discussion today is I ran out of file allocation space on my server for images and movies. Many of us like to show off participation at HPDE events, mountain runs etc. This allows us to go to a central location for a presentation. It has made if fun for those that have participated. This is not something you have to do to be in the club but if you would like to participate in the capabilities it offers, you would want to be a paying member. Unless we come up with an alternative, as you have suggested.

In the event that someone reading this thread has not seen the web thread... this should be a prerequisite:

Lets keep the discussion up as things are developing quiet well.

AC8 (Can't get used to that!) I think you need to explain a little more about what you are offering. Sounds like you have more contacts than I could have ever dreamed of. Are you saying you can supply equipment? I was just thinking of purchasing a web hosting account. Sounds like you have access to the mother load. :D

There seems to be many new ideas for the GA RX-8 club development (i.e. website, membership fees, banner). I think we need a sit-down to discuss these ideas together as a club and come to mutual agreements. Posting here is great but is hardly the place to flesh out ideas.

You hit the nail right on the head. Hey, October 29th sounds like a great day to discuss all of this, we are all going to be there already.

Nabil has a good point, being a part of the Georgia RX-8 club should remain a free option to any 8 owner out there. Use of the club website on the other hand should be what will need to be paid for. I was thinking about that last night. Not everyone takes a lot of pictures, or shoots video everytime they get in the car. :D And this site does a very good job of keeping us informed. Any member could access the club site and check out the calendar, but not have the ability to upload files, or have an email account.

Enough ramble, lets just discuss this whole thing at Andrettis, over a cold beer and sore ribs. Obviously the banner will not be ready, I need to work on the other ideas I have, and post them in that thread.

Val, I agree. At least this gets us discussing it ahead of time so we are prepared when we can sit down and talk.

A couple thoughts...

- AC8 mentioned server hardware. I'm really interested in where this could lead and would like to here amplification on this.

- Another possibility is to get a server agreement with a hosting company. This would require someone that knows UNIX to help set up the hosting. Does anyone here work with UNIX, MS IIS, ASP, SQL, PSP, etc? My expertise is not in the server management.

Oh yea! Apache and PHP on a G5. I would like to discuss further on this when we get together. Could be an extended conversation. I'm sure the SQL is MySQL... right?

yup. mysql. i'm not currently utilizing it. i set that up so that i could complete a project for a class back when i was in school. i had to build a website for a company, and the one i chose was pretty technologically clueless, so i figured a CMS would be the best thing for them, and the schools servers didn't allow php or mysql, so i set my system up to build the site.

i've since forgotten everything about sql :o
but we can definately talk about it at the andretti's, or if you are around the perimeter or holcomb bridge area, we could meet up for drinks after work. open to everyone of course

hasweb.com

http://www.hasweb.com/linux_web_hosting.php

Very stable, unix boxes, cpanel front end, unlimited email and ftp setup, can be managed through (god forbid) frontpage extensions, very active forum and userbase, excellent pricing.

Phlash, that's actually pretty aggressive pricing... 100 GIGs for $100. I think something like this would be great. The file sizes for a lot of the videos are huge. This would required someone to set it up in UNIX/Linux, wouldn't it?

Well, we really don't have to use the frontpage extensions, even if they are present. (what a bunch of crap code)

Are you using this company?

EDIT:
Actually, I read that wrong. The 100GB is for bandwidth. That's 5 GB of space at $100 which is the same space as startlogic which is $70.50 for the year.

I think we are going to need more than 5 GB.

off of old alabama near old alabama connector. usually take the mansell exit when coming home though. the light to turn left onto old alabama takes way too long

now, i know nothing about this company, but i saw that the pricing is similar to startlogic (no special price), but what looked nice about it...unmetered bandwidth.
