ALSCCA Solo School - 3/4/07

Here's the best $75 you can spend all year!

The ALSCCA is putting on a Solo School. It will be a 1 day event and will be split between two locations in Birmingham, AL. Two different types of courses are Autocross at Birmingham Race Course parking lot and Skid Pad at Barber Motorsports Park. The day will be split between both locations. It will start around 10:00 AM which makes it easy to travel from GA. You should get around 30 runs, which is more than you would get in a year's worth of autocrosses plus the skid pad training is invaluable. Space is limited as there are only 9 slots left at this time so RESPOND PROMPTLY!

L8APEX 02-14-2007 09:24 AM

I have sent an email in, to see if I can get a spot. So, if there is still one left, I am in.

olddragger 02-14-2007 10:29 AM

Phlash 02-14-2007 11:29 AM

well not for RA but for CMP, Roebling, Barber, and whatever else i can fit in...i'm in 3.......i would think that L8 would be joining us soon........he has some scary talent, he just doesn't know it yet.....kurtbob is 3, pam is 3 I think, and hell if any of the big head instructor types want to, they can still run 3 as well......

SilverEIGHT 02-14-2007 11:46 AM

My fate is in my instructor from Road Atlanta's hands. DE3 is scheduled for my second event but if my wise and experienced instructor thinks me needs further DE2 then I will just have to wait to join you. This is one of the reasons I want to participate in this SCCA Solo event, to gain that extra knowledge required to put me into DE3. It's two weekends before Road Atlanta and the timing is perfect. Hope it works.

Denny, want to join us for some slip-n-slide?

Phlash 02-14-2007 11:56 AM

sorry silver....didn't mean to leave you out.......yes, silver should be there soon as well

Phlash 02-17-2007 07:32 AM

oh i wanna go, but schedule is not working out yet.......we have a server move that was to take place that am....I'm waiting on my higher up's ok.....

SilverEIGHT 02-17-2007 07:40 AM

Hope you can make it Phlash.

I have to back out. My dumbass did not look at the calendar right, that is our first weekend at the new house, no way am I gonna get an all day kitchen pass. Sorry guys, I really wanted to go, but it just ain't gonna be possible.

SilverEIGHT 02-19-2007 07:06 AM

OK, wish you could make it. I think this is going to be a very important event for those of us that need lessons in controlling our car. It's kind of like one of those expensive sessions with Panoz but for $75 instead of $595. Ain't no way I missing this one.

Hi guys. I would like to also say that we are adding another feature. It will be a high speed figure eight. This will help in the right turn left turn transition and trailbraking and help in getting to more understand the limits of each car without the risk of injury to car and pride :) See yall Sunday, David Leonard.

SilverEIGHT 02-28-2007 05:26 PM

Awesome! A bonus run. David, any idea how many times we will be running each of the stations?

It all depends on the drivers not taking out a lot of cones . The good news is that it is not a timed event like autoxing so we dont have to worry about timing equipment. Also a low number of students. This is the first time our club has done this so I am really excided about everyones comments good or bad. If this does well, we are going to try to do this a couple times a year. I can tell you it will be the best $75 you can spend. I think you are going to get a lot of seat time :) David

SilverEIGHT 02-28-2007 06:31 PM

If this turns out like I think it will then I will probably be signing up for every event if it does not interfear with my present track schedule.

vette6autox 02-28-2007 07:19 PM

Also some of us that are going to be at this event Sunday are going to be instructing at Road Atlanta 9,10,11 of March with the Peachtree BMWCCA. So if some of yall aren't doing anything come on out. We will be the second event on track with the new pavement if any one wants to take a couple of laps. I just put on a new set of Penski coilovers(lots of money) suppose to be good on my car for about 3 seconds at Road Atlanta . We will see.David.

SilverEIGHT 02-28-2007 08:37 PM

OK, I call dibs on a couple laps.

SilverEIGHT 03-01-2007 06:19 AM

Here is a layout of the BRC set-up. This is gonna be AWESOME! If you look closely, you can see the cones. WOW... and we do BARBER wet skid pad too! I'm having a sensory overload. OMG, I'm gonna have a blast!

A special thanks to Robert and David for putting this on! Awesome guys. I hope I'm invited to the next event. I know of two more that want to come if you have room for them.

All of you guys that decided it was not worth the trouble to go to this event are soooooo unlucky! This was the first time the ALSCCA group has put this event on and they had a lot to offer. The features started off as training tools to get to the autox course. They were a build up so to speak to give you the foundation to take on the full course. However I think the two best featurs were the wet skidpad and the dry figure-8.

One observation, I think everyone should drive the wet skidpad first as it really teaches you how to handel the car in a slide as it magnafies every move you make. Driving 5 to 10 mph is all you can expect but OMG is it a real learning too.

I have a few movies to share. I will bring some with me to Road Atlanta to share on my laptop.

This was a very short feature. The object was to go faster and faster to till you reached your maximum speed. The flag man would flag you to the direction of his choice. I would not want to be this guy. I managed to floor it and never let up until I got the flag and I let up just to make the turn. I ran this one 5 times and had to work up the nerve because I was afraid I'd run over the guy. Quick Lane Change

I think this was Gimlet's first run on the Slalom. The cones were spaced at a decreasing distance. Gimmie lost it about 2 cones from the end but he looked really good to that point. I think he forgot to slow down just a tad. Gimlet on Slalom

Me on the slalom course. Slalom

This was one of the two most fun features. This may look easy but I assure you that if you reached 10 MPH without loosing it you were doing good. The object was to move the back end out about 3/4 way through the turn, counter steer and rotate the car back to make the next turn... sounds easy doesn't it. SURE! Wet Skidpad

valpac 03-05-2007 08:35 PM

That Wet Skidpad looked like fun. Do you know when they are gonna try this event again?

Hey guys,I'm glad that the people who came from out of town had a good time. I think I had more fun instructing everyone at the wet skid pad than the people driving. I hope I helped. As far as another date I have already recieved dates from the Barber folks on what days are available. I just need some input if folks would like for us to host the event again this year. Thanks again for coming. David Leonard

SilverEIGHT 03-06-2007 12:35 AM

David, I know of at least 2 more that want to participate and I've not even talked with everyone yet. I will be sending you guys a feedback email, hopefully today if I can get some time. Thanks for everything.

Don

Val, this was one of those events that everyone should take wheather they are tracking or not. It's a learn your car event that we have never had before and one that should be required before ever getting on a road course. I hope Robert and David put another one on this year. I'm sure Robert will keep me or us informed. This one was by invitation only up until about 3 weeks till the event and it opened up because of a change in required cost from Barber.

I would have loved to go, but I just have too much on my plate right now. If they do host this event again this year, I will definitely make the next one. Timing just did not work out for me on this one.

Phlash 03-06-2007 07:18 AM

Wet skid pad to slide???? "pshaw"... enough speed, a turn, and a throttle lift and I can match that slide..................:mdrmed:

JK, glad you guys had a great time......just couldn't get a way from work stuff.

Looks more like an ice rink! Wonder if Kroger will be mad if I set up hoses in their parking lot.

Wet skid pad looked like fun, we used to do that stuff all winter long back when I lived in Canada.

I used to actually to pile a bunch of my buddies in my mom's 4WD AMC Eagle wagon and get on the neighborhood ice rink for late nite "Ice Ballet" rides..
