Ok so here's a quick update. I did some searching read that the intake may have been the culprit to my car shutting off at idle. So i pop the hood before i go to start the car and check all the clamps and pipes to make sure they are nice and tight. Well it turns out the clamp on that connects the intake to the TB was slightly loose so I tightened that sucker down. Since then my idle has returned to normal and I have had happy driving since then.
So as a friendly reminder, make sure that intake is on there tight!!! |
Glad to hear you got everything figured out, Scolon! I just got my 8 back from the garage this weekend, new transmission straight from Mazda. It's still riding really rough, so I guess I won't know how it's going until I break it in a bit more.

I was about to install my oil cooler today... and i didnt have the E-Clips i needed to keep the hoses held together... made me sad :(

Are you rebuilding the engine yourself or sending it out?

If all goes well this will be completely custom made from scratch by my budy. We will use a well known turbo for the build though. Maybe a GT35r like in the Turblown kit or a Borg Warner EFR 6758.
Since you won't be making a build thread initially, you better be posting up progress on here! |

Hey everybody, I got my car last August and I'm purchasing an new exhaust for my RX-8, and I have it narrowed it down to 3. Racing Beat, GReddy and HKS. Any input on which I should get would be appreciated. Any other options I have not considered would also be appreciated.

I just started following your posts in the big boy's thread (aka FI for dummies). Good luck with the build. Hopefully everything falls into place. It looks like you're learning everything you need to know.
Since you won't be making a build thread initially, you better be posting up progress on here! So far it's a battle roy-al between the Borg Warner EFR 7670 ($1,700) and the Turblown GT35R ($1,050). I am undecided but it may lean towards the GT35R since it has better efficency. However, the EFR has a built in wastegate...grrrrrr! Don't know! Don't let the prices mislead...with the GT35R I would need to buy a wastegate and I believe the associated plumbing. Anyways...I sayz too mush! You all must sufferz! :wiggle: |

I would go with turblown's choice of turbo... Their kit if top notch and if they chose the GT35R is for a reason.....
If you want a turbo that spools up a little bit quicker but will not get the power potetial of the GT35r in a Rx8 application then the Borge Warner EFR 7670 would be the best choice. If you don't mind a slight delay in spool but will have all the power you will ever need from low/mid range to redline then the GT35r is the best option. Now keep this in mind the GT35r spools very fast. I haven't heard anyone mention the phrase turbo lag at all. I believe it starts spooling around 1500 rpm. The difference is the EFR turbo is showing more boost in the low rpms then the GT35r and the GT35r can keep boost constant without falling off till redline (the BW EFR would start to fall off around 7 to 8 k rpm). So it is personal preference not supplier recommendation that should make your decission. I just happed to agree with Turblown. When I am racing...I will never see 2000 rpms. I will live in the 5k to 8.5k rpm range which translates to GT35r. In fact even if this was a daily driven car with no racing the dyno with the GT35r mimics the Rx8's stock dyno power curve. I assume it would feel like an insanely fast Rx8. :naughty: I hope that helps. |

Is that GT35R at that price dual ball bearing??
If so that a good deal! They usually cost around $1,500 "This is a journal bearing GT35R with a stage V turbine wheel. Ball Bearing Upgrade is available at addition cost." This leads me to believe this is not an R or ball bearing turbo. Still researching. |

According to Garret's website any of there turbo's that have the "R" at the model number (GT35R) are ball bearing turbo's but Turblown's website says:

But I do think the dual ball bearing GT35R is a good fit for you. Itll make plenty of power and have good spool. Good luck man! |
Ima have to buy new tires by this fall...might get another set of stock wheels so i could have a set for autox only... Anyone want to see about buying a bunch of tires at the same place at the same time to get a nice discount when it comes time? :)
