Ok so here's a quick update. I did some searching read that the intake may have been the culprit to my car shutting off at idle. So i pop the hood before i go to start the car and check all the clamps and pipes to make sure they are nice and tight. Well it turns out the clamp on that connects the intake to the TB was slightly loose so I tightened that sucker down. Since then my idle has returned to normal and I have had happy driving since then.

So as a friendly reminder, make sure that intake is on there tight!!!

Glad to hear you got everything figured out, Scolon! I just got my 8 back from the garage this weekend, new transmission straight from Mazda. It's still riding really rough, so I guess I won't know how it's going until I break it in a bit more.

I was about to install my oil cooler today... and i didnt have the E-Clips i needed to keep the hoses held together... made me sad :(

Planning has started but I will say this. Once I start this I will not post a thread until all the work is done. I know I am a cock tease! :rollingla:rollingla

I just refuse to be like one of those guys that spend there life posting and not working on this so this is how it's going to be. Once done I will post all pics, videos, and dyno. This may take months.

BTW are you still going with the Esmeril kit?

If all goes well this will be completely custom made from scratch by my budy. We will use a well known turbo for the build though. Maybe a GT35r like in the Turblown kit or a Borg Warner EFR 6758.

Tmekanik 02-29-2012 11:37 AM

Are you rebuilding the engine yourself or sending it out?

I just started following your posts in the big boy's thread (aka FI for dummies). Good luck with the build. Hopefully everything falls into place. It looks like you're learning everything you need to know.

Since you won't be making a build thread initially, you better be posting up progress on here!

Hey everybody, I got my car last August and I'm purchasing an new exhaust for my RX-8, and I have it narrowed it down to 3. Racing Beat, GReddy and HKS. Any input on which I should get would be appreciated. Any other options I have not considered would also be appreciated.

No rebuild necessary...my engine has 15k miles on the clock...it's fresh...it says naughty things...and very good power.

So far it's a battle roy-al between the Borg Warner EFR 7670 ($1,700) and the Turblown GT35R ($1,050). I am undecided but it may lean towards the GT35R since it has better efficency. However, the EFR has a built in wastegate...grrrrrr! Don't know! Don't let the prices mislead...with the GT35R I would need to buy a wastegate and I believe the associated plumbing. Anyways...I sayz too mush! You all must sufferz! :wiggle:

My personal preference would be RB but in the end its up to what you think sounds best because they basically give you the same minimal performance gain (excluding the HKS single exhaust that helps in small weight savings).

I would go with turblown's choice of turbo... Their kit if top notch and if they chose the GT35R is for a reason.....

Considering the fact that we are persuing this turbo project ourselves I wanted more assurance then Turblown's reputation (which is good). I wanted to learn how to size the turbo and why one turbo is better than another. Not to mention you will be surprised how much turbo sizing has to do with driver preference. For instance:

If you want a turbo that spools up a little bit quicker but will not get the power potetial of the GT35r in a Rx8 application then the Borge Warner EFR 7670 would be the best choice.

If you don't mind a slight delay in spool but will have all the power you will ever need from low/mid range to redline then the GT35r is the best option.

Now keep this in mind the GT35r spools very fast. I haven't heard anyone mention the phrase turbo lag at all. I believe it starts spooling around 1500 rpm. The difference is the EFR turbo is showing more boost in the low rpms then the GT35r and the GT35r can keep boost constant without falling off till redline (the BW EFR would start to fall off around 7 to 8 k rpm).

So it is personal preference not supplier recommendation that should make your decission. I just happed to agree with Turblown. When I am racing...I will never see 2000 rpms. I will live in the 5k to 8.5k rpm range which translates to GT35r. In fact even if this was a daily driven car with no racing the dyno with the GT35r mimics the Rx8's stock dyno power curve. I assume it would feel like an insanely fast Rx8. :naughty:

I hope that helps.

Is that GT35R at that price dual ball bearing??
If so that a good deal!
They usually cost around $1,500

According to Garret's website any of there turbo's that have the "R" at the model number (GT35R) are ball bearing turbo's but Turblown's website says:

"This is a journal bearing GT35R with a stage V turbine wheel. Ball Bearing Upgrade is available at addition cost."

This leads me to believe this is not an R or ball bearing turbo. Still researching.

Yeah I was thinking that price is cheap for a GT35R.
But I do think the dual ball bearing GT35R is a good fit for you.
Itll make plenty of power and have good spool.
Good luck man!

Some searching will help but to make it a quick answer, taking out the cat will give you the best performance gain.

If you didnt find anything on Rx7club then call the ticket master for Homestead and ask them if they are having the rotary car club coral...also ask if they have the package that includes the paddock pass...that pass is more important than the tickets to watch the race...TRUST me! You get to breath on the cars and talk to the drivers/owners etc.

Ricky SE3P 03-09-2012 06:16 PM

Chris, thats what im getting... But ill ask about the rotary corral

RotaryP7 03-14-2012 12:43 AM

What's a good body shop in Miami that deals with our 8's? Man I'm trying to fix my headunit. I took it to some shop like 2 years ago and the radio is kind of loose. They even lost my screws.

Thing is, I took it to install an iPod adapter. And when they removed the radio it went all crazy. Yea, long story. I just need someone to fix that crap. I'm already tired. It's not damaged, just loose. I need the damn screws. And that shop doesn't exist anymore. LOL.

Does anyone know where I can get a passenger seat airbag for an 04 with cloth seats? I've been searching but to no avail. I found one guy craigslist who had one, but he was asking $250 for it. Little over priced if you ask me. Anyone have any ideas???

scolon 03-14-2012 02:11 PM

Craigslist would have been my suggestion.

Is anybody going to the SFLA Mazda Crew meet at chipotle? I just washed my car inside out and I don't want to be the only rotard out there.

The only issue is the pulley. It needs to be torqued to spec which I believe is like 90 ft/lbs ish...can anyone confirm?

I checked the shop manual and couldn't find anything about the pulley specs. I did find the torque settings for the bolts that hold the alt in place if that helps.

Caveman has it and it's next on my list of mods. I think all the reviews speak for itself.

I know it's short notice but me and RX8SHNKVI will be out at towers tonight. Hopefully we see a few other guys out there.

Instead of an M3 look at a 335i, 335is, or 135i. With a juicebox they'll leave an m3 behind.
