De-oxidizing the hood begins!

On my last car i had a VIS invader hood. I kept the car in sun daily but had the hood for a year and half with no defects on the clear, i kept it waxed. I sold the car and gave the hood to a buddy of mine. He had the hood for past 2 and half years and now its oxidized. The clear isnt peeling, it is still rather really smooth! but i picked the hood back up from him for free and going to put it onto my girlfriends car.

Any ideas on how to clean the hood up?

WET SAND extremely fine grit?
LOTS OF BUFFING?
Needs to be cleared again?

again the hood is still really smooth, no clear peeling, like i have seen others do.

Here are the pics of how the hood looked before any work was done.

are there hood pins on it?

Z0oMzo0m 05-26-2010 08:57 PM

yes there are hood pins.

I started using light sand paper, and some acrylic clear rattle can spray paint. and rubbing compound. This was taking way to long..

Since this way taking to long, and wasnt even with a rattle can, i started all over and stripped it down and got some automotive paint since my dad has a spray gun and compressor.

unless you want to do it again... get the hood cleared at some point. or even a 3M clear bra. After almost 2 years my seibon CF hood started to oxidize... I painted it the body color.

Yeah the 3m would possibly be best thing overall after its final.

But i have to give VIS, 2 thumbs up for there quality!

Well guys, been a little bit but here's the status with the hood. Since its first time ever doing this, it was a learning experience and time consuming, and have to be patient..

I spent some time sanding spraying, sanding spraying and sanding spraying...

Basically wet sanded hood down till it was haze free, when you wet sand the oxidation its usually a yellow milky color.

I used 600 grit wet/dry paper.

Once the hood was free of oxidation, you should see white milky streaks from sanding.

Here is what it looked like after i cleared it.

i went to do a last and final coat and it oranged peel all over the place.. :( It got to hot outside and i should have stopped when i was ahead.

So i had to get out the sand paper again and get back to work..

Here is the clear coat i am using, easy mixing, and fairly cheap. cost 35.00 total

I was able to start clearing again. This time i changed the guns, and used a finishing gun. Really took some time and still in process. Il post pictures of the after math. hopefully it will be done :)

laythor 06-13-2010 03:43 PM

you've been doing all the sanding by hand?

Z0oMzo0m 06-13-2010 05:28 PM

yes, only way to feel it get really smooth like ice while wet sanding
