two quick wax questions

every what should you give your car a full waxing adn how long do you have to let the wax on the car (haze) before taking it on, thanks

RotaryNoob 12-27-2004 04:25 PM

You should re-wax after water no longer beads and the surface loses its slickness. Depends really on the product used. As for how long to leave it on also depends on the product. Most "waxes" you would do a panel at a time and as soon as it dries wipe it clean. Make sure to use microfiber towels to wipe it off.

Uh, read the back of the bottle.

Different products have different directions. For NXT, I actually do the whole car before I wipe off b/c it has to dry for 10-15 minutes. For carnaubas, as RotaryNoob said, do 1-2 panels at a time. And always apply in straight lines, not in a circular pattern.

Batmobile1 12-29-2004 02:35 AM

apply as often as you like! Dont wait for the water to stop beading to re wax, thats like waiting for the car to run out of oil before putting any more in. NO longer than every 3 months for a natural wax, up to six with synthetics under normal conditions. Clay rub or paint clean every 6 months for best protection.

Every 6 months?! Holy cow, my NXT only lasts six weeks!! I wonder if I'm using the products incorrectly, but from what I have read, among the more common in-store brands, I haven't been told of any that can last 6 months, unless maybe you keep your car indoors and don't drive very often. And 3 months for a carnauba?? I definitely think that is incorrect--natural waxes break down a lot more quickly than polymer sealants. Perhaps 3 weeks, but not 3 months.

Although I do agree with Noob that water beading is the threshold test, like you, Batmobile, I don't usually wait for non-beading (except now, during the winter) and detail my 8 more often than I need to. Be aware, though, Veilside, that the more frequently you detail your car, the greater the chances of scratching or marring your paint. Good luck.

There are many degrees of "beadiness". You can see the wax starting to lose ground; don't have to wait until there's none left.

Zaino, klasse, UPP etc... are all very durable products. They provide atleast 6 months of protection if maintained properly. NXT's durability isn't really up to par with those high end sealant but should give you 2-3 months of protection. my s100 and souveran has lasted for 2-3 months on my black daily driver. They are both carnauba based products.

I was going to argue with you, but then I checked the bettecarcare.com website and found your information to be true. The only addendum I must add is that carnaubas evaporate in the heat and don't last as long as you mentioned during the warmer months.

I hate conforming to the masses because I'm so sick and tired of hearing about Zaino, but maybe it might make sense to become a convert on this one... :( Just out of curiosity, by "maintained properly," do you mean regular washing or QD'ing or...?

SLiM8 12-29-2004 02:59 PM

Yes, I understand that carnuba waxes won't stand as much heat as polymer sealants. I live in Vegas and during summer it's really really hot. My waxes still lasted more than 6 weeks under 100F temp. I wash my car weekly and qd my car atleast once a day. This keeps my car looking shiny and glossy through out the week.

RotaryNoob 12-29-2004 05:07 PM

I'm paranoid about QDing my car. When I see dust on it, I am very hesitant to use even MF towels on it for fear of creating swirls. How dirty can it be to still use QD.

Batmobile1 12-29-2004 10:02 PM

ah, the mazda owner. forever wiping, washing, and polishing. The high end waxes have an exponential percentage of carnuba compared to most off the shelf natural waxes. And we are all using detergent free or neutral pH soaps right? Broke my heart to see a green 8 go through the carwash the other day...... dust is okay to QD, dirt is no good. You dont want to be wiping the dirt behind your rear wheels.after that donut you pulled in the McDonalds parking lot trying to impress a group of girls. Use your best judgement.

markd...I understand yur reluctance on Zaino since NXT is such a great product. Yet you'll get way more than 6 weeks of durability with a proper Zaino treatment. Depending on washing regularity, if doing a weekly wash with Z7 concentrate, should be able to get four months of Zaino bond/shine before having to reapply the polish...that's 16 washes. Rough estimate IMO, but if you use Z6 after each Z7 wash then no reason why you can't get 24 washes over six months before another polish treatment is required. Note, using 100% cotton towels with fresh water and proper care is required during each wash, but Zaino will go the distance and save you money over NXT in the long run....good luck mate!
