Teflon Coating

I have heard from a few people that they used Teflon to coat their cars. They say it costs a little over $200 to buy the complete kit, but after that you don't need to wash your car, or reapply the Teflon coating for about 3 years.

Instead of washing your car, all that needs to be done is to rinse it with water and that takes care of all the dirt.

Any thoughts or experience from anybody?

Hoax.

Red Devil 07-16-2003 01:07 PM

No...the kits do exist. They are made from a Teflon-based compound, at least I've been told it's Teflon.

I heard about the stuff at a classic car show. It was a few owners of cars that claimed to have used the product on their personal vehicles. It was just coincidental that I found out. I asked one of them what brand wax they were using just out of curiosity, and that's when they told me they were using a Teflon-based compound, instead.

They may have been full of it, but I didn't think they were joking.

That's all I know...I'll have to do an internet search.

You can get water spots on Teflon too.

Hoax for sure.

If you don't want to spend any time detailing your car -- use this stuff. I have a friend who uses it and likes it. He has noticed that the finish (not the paint) will tend to crack and will need to be re-applied -- I think it looks OK but not awesome in terms of finish. If you want a really deep DEEP wet show car shine and like to maintain your vehicle as part of the fun -- then buy Zaino :D

If that's the case, I think I will stick wax.

Just so you guys know. I know someone who bought a brand new F-250 they had the $200 teflon coating done to their truck, and have demonstrated to me how all they had to do was rinse it with the hose (and it was dirty and dusty......and guess what?? It was as shiny as the day it was driven off of the lot.
I also saw it after the rain, same thing...slick, clean and shiny. I didn't see any water marks.
Just my viewpoint from what I saw.

Just to add another side to the argument... panel shops hate this stuff - it makes it almost impossible to blend in the paint on a repair.

So it may be as drastic as having a car stripped and repainted to regain consitency throughout the entire vehicle? Or am I looking too far into it?

They're playing you for a chump. They don't "insist" on anything. It's your car and you can do or get what you want. Turn down the deal. They're just looking to pad their pockets at your expense. Since the car isn't here yet you have time to make it clear that THEY don't do anything to YOUR car. We've got to band together against these useless dealer markups.

Go screw

Tell them to "POLOSH THIS!"

Tell them to "POLISH THIS!" as you hold up your middle finger while walking out the door to anotherfind another dealer. Ask them "how dumb do they think consumers are?":p

Just found this on the MazdaUSA Web Site: "All 2002 and newer model-year vehicles have a clear coat on the exterior paint. For 2001 and older model-year vehicles, please contact your local authorized Mazda dealer to determine if your vehicle's exterior paint has a clear coat."

Is this a teflon coat or essentially the same as a Teflon coat? Since Mazda is already clear-coating, are these dealer-option coats even a bigger waste of money than before?
