Sealant concoctions
 

Hi all:

1. Just wondering if anyone else here has made sealant concoctions from thier regular chosen sealant brand: by for example adding it to thier favorite wash, thier favorite detailing spray, etc. in small quantities. The idea being that the amount added is only to replenish minimal loss of sealant from day to day use. The result being that all of one's car care products are also carrying a bit of the right sealant. Has anyone tried this?


2. I have been thinking about making a sealant layer treatment for small scratches/imperfections in the sealant layer, for use only as a replenisher or "maintenance mix".

I want to mix a "tiny" proportion of polish/abrasive/cleaner (of low abrasiveness or cut) with the sealant. The idea is that if I get the mix right, the amount of material cut away/stripped will equal the amount of new sealant added, with repeated rubbing scratches should fill in and ridges should get removed... i.e. everything gets smoothed out (every scratch in a somewhat flexible sealant has associated smaller ridges on either side, until they wear off). Has anyone tried this??

I have a proposed test to find the right ratio:

a. paint a flat surface (ideally spare smoothly sanded aluminum) with dark car paint... allow to dry thoroughly
b. apply one or two thin even layers of sealant
c. prepare a bunch of concoctions with different ratios of sealant to abrasive
d. apply repeatedly in separate portions of the surface the different concoctions with separate white terry cloths
e. apply only the sealant repeatedly in a special sealant only area, and apply only the abrasive in a special abrasive only area, both with separate white terry cloths.
f. monitor terry cloths for paint

Ideally, the sealant only area should result in no paint removal and the terry cloth should remain white, the sealant should actually be building up on the surface as usual. Ideally the abrasive should cut through the existing sealant on the abrasive only area and get to the paint resulting in a dark spot on the terry cloth. IDEALLY somewhere in the concoctions, there will be a ratio between a group of mixes which cuts through the paint eventually (even slowly), and a group of mixes which never cuts through the paint. I could home in on the right ratio by creating more mixes in the area of this "transition".

Any comments/suggestions??

summary: I have a favorite abrasive and a favorite sealant for intensive care, why not, for minor replenishment and maintenance, combine them into a concoction?

Not a good idea. You will be sealing in all the grime, and dirt that is not removed.

You need to have the car stripped of wax and grime etc. before you add sealant.

Ever wax over a dirty car before? You can lock in the tree sap and other grime.

It doesn't wash off. Only way to get it off is stripping it. Same thing goes if you miss a spot when using Zanio or other products. The dirt is in the layer inbeteen the paint and the coating.
