Scraped the wheel on same day trying to take pictures on my 2 days old car too.

yea everybody has that on the rear discs. Take it to the dealer ship and tell them you would like it sanded and painted under warrenty. They did it for me quite quickly...though i should have asked for a color asides from silver. and this have been discussed a couple times so if you want more info on it use the search and i belive there might be a tsb about it in case the dealership gives you a problem.

Gee, that's pretty bad. Did you buy new?? I'm surprised a dealer would let it off the lot without repainting. Cleaning it up and repainting is a pretty good fix, though. And it's a common warranty item.

Mine are starting to look like that again - after being 'fixed' twice already by the dealership. :(

With rims like that, I wouldn't worry so much about the rust!

My brakes look nothing like that, I have had the car for 1 1/2 years and have never had the dealer fix it for the rust either. I did have the squeaky brake tsb done about a year ago.

You need to try harder not to hit any curbs. My rims have no curb marks on any of them.

I accidently rubbed my rim against a curb once. I took some very fine grit sand paper and water to the scratched area and smoothed it out so debris wouldnt collect in the deep scratches and create an eye sore. As for the rust collecting around the perimeter of the rotor hub I contacted two dealerships and they both told me that Mazda does not warranty that partiular cosmetic issue. FYI the two deaerships I contacted were Anaheim and Tustin in California.

I bought new and the dealership did all of the recalls plus put in a new battery, but did not sandblast & paint the rotors. They had 3 -4 days to get it done, but being a TSB instead of a recall I guess they didn't want to take the initiative without a customer complaint.

They're not sandblasting it first. Does that service department do anything right?

I've been driving my mountaineer for 8 years and never had to worry about parking so close tothe curb. If I hit the curb, I just feel the bump and repark again. This was a big learning experience for me. While backing up trying to park, I felt something and I didn't know what is was, so i backed up some more. This stupid idiot could have prevented with a very small scratch but ended up scraping 1/2 of the rim :wallbash:

Oh, few days later, I did it again on the other side, but it was a small 2-3 inch scrape :worship:

Does anyone have the link to the TSB? My dealer refused to fix this under warrenty.

Considering it is an MRI and not a TSB, do I have any ground to stand on when I walk into the dealer and demand they fix it for free?

There's been some debate on that. I know it's not helpful to say, 'your mileage may vary,' but that's what members have found. I'd suggest reading back through these posts (maybe skimming the similar threads too) to see if anyone did get the fix at one of your local dealers (you must have your choice of several if you're willing to drive an hour or so) and take special note if another NJ member was refused the service.

My personal suggestion would be to try to bundle this with some other service or warranty work.

It's not always easy to convince the dealer to validate this info , let alone get them to assist in resolving the problem. :boink:

Talk about curb rash...

Someone say curb rash?

I went in a few days ago for break squeal and they ended up disassembling the brakes to polish the discs and lubricate contact points to get rid of rust (covered under warranty). Unfortunately the squeal was even worse afterwards...service manager says it'll take several days for the squeal to go away naturally. Dunno if that's true or not so we'll see what happens :p:

Don't bother, its just the brake pad residue that's rusted when its moist. No point removing since they will came back anyway unless you change the brake pads.

In a current thread on another RX-8 forum, someone said that "Mazda has discontinued repairing this cosmetic defect". Anyone know if dealers are still repainting these? Mine was done back in May 2005, and I'm now out of warranty, so it's a moot point for me.

Yeah that was discussed here as well. Some dealers may honor it some may not. I think it's always been that way. I convinced my dealer to do it under warranty. It's been a few moths though. Might be less hassle to just DIY.
