Is a rear license plate holder helpful?

My plate just came in the mail, but I don't have a rear plate holder/frame. I can't remember my last car's holder (how soon we forget...) - or even if it had one - but my question is this:

Will attaching the plate without a holder endanger the paint? Should I find a holder before replacing the temporary (laminated plastic) plate with the permanent one?

I had the same concerns about the plate marring the finish without a bracket. When putting on the plate I didn't have a bracket handy but I did have some adhesive-backed pads used for under furniture feet or vases, that kind of stuff. I put some on each corner of the plate and it is held off nicely from the paint... just another option.

Yeah, I had the same concern. I picked up a flat lexan liscense plate cover at Advance Auto (flat plastic the same size as the plate) and mounted it behind the plate. Also I picked up a set of stainless steels screws for it as well. I was not going to put the metal plate up against my paint.

Glad to see that I am not the only one that is overly protective. I used duct tape on the back of the plate.

I am having the Knobmeister (http://www.knobmeister.com/) Joe has been making things for the Miata since it's inception and does excellent work. make up a black plate frame for me with the RX-8 logo engraved on the bottom part. I will take pics when I get it installed.

That looks like some pretty nice stuff he's putting out. Let us know how your holder turns out.

I use stainless steel hardware with polyurethane washers in front and rubber grommets between the plate and the paint – this can also prevent stereo rattles if you use large enough grommets.
