Polishing exhaust tips

So I figured I would put up some before/after pics of exhaust tips that I recently polished. I used the following:

Blue Magic metal polish (cream)
Mothers Powerball Mini
Some paper towels to apply the polish
Microfiber to buff polish out.

I don't claim to be super experienced or a pro at this but I think this can show what can be done with a few hours and some patience. So don't be afraid to buy an old used exhaust!!

Looka shiny again. Well done!

Jedi54 12-21-2009 05:05 PM

did you polish the whole exhaust or just the exhaust tip?
how long did it take?

The Reverend 12-21-2009 05:11 PM

I just did the tips Jedi. Each one took ~2 hours.

Jedi54 12-21-2009 05:22 PM

lol i actually finished mine in like an hour but i guess mine werent as dirty plus i used steel wool kinda thing and it came clean very quick

The Reverend 12-22-2009 06:05 PM

Well played...I don't think mine had been cleaned once in their 2+ year existence

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 12-23-2009 03:07 PM

Not to disrespect your work but 2 hrs a tip and that's what you came out with. 2 hrs for both and mine looked like a mirror inside and out now it takes 5 min a piece to get them back to a nice shine with 30 min and 6 mth of build up they'll be back to mirror. As a matter of fact i'll be right back with a before and after pic. Mothers FTMFW

The Reverend 12-23-2009 03:46 PM

lol i guess this was a competition :scratchhe

mscamp02 12-23-2009 03:53 PM

^doest look like same size exhaust... and yea apparently it was a competition. Good job though OP, looks good

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 12-23-2009 04:01 PM

sorry I just felt like hating on someone.:greenchai Two hours a tip is just plain crazy besides isn't everything a competition

mscamp02 12-23-2009 04:29 PM

maybe while watching tv or multi tasking or just taking the time to do it right. You gotta think about that and not hate

not to mention that is an ancient exhaust and from the looks of it was never cleaned (you bought that in the fs thread recently right?)

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 12-23-2009 04:42 PM

no it's been on the car for sometime. 2+ yrs i think

The Reverend 12-23-2009 04:48 PM

mscamp: :yesnod: it was from the fs thread

Mr.&Mrs.Magic: well you are a better polisher than I  these are the holidays we don't need this argument crap in any threads :) take it as more evidence that dirty exhausts are salvageable

mscamp02 12-23-2009 04:50 PM

^I was tempted to buy them because I'm still running stock but didnt want the old rust look lol, I'm pissed off now that it looks so good

Detrich 12-23-2009 04:52 PM

great job!

did you try also polishing the bottom of the muffler, and if so can u post pix?

that's one area that looks fugly to me on the 8 stock... the muffler sits so low and it turns bronze color, so when u look at the car from behind u see the bumper then this brown thing below it..

The Reverend 12-23-2009 04:53 PM

Heh, I've gone through 4 exhausts already this year so if I am ever compelled to switch again I will let you know, don't really see myself getting rid of an RE Amemiya exhaust though :lol2:

I did not actually, there were some sort of considerable scratches on the bottom that would have taken more than a simple polishing. The design of this exhaust is such that the canister is hardly visible and at my (not extremely low by any means) ride height you definitely cannot see it from behind. I'll try to get a picture this weekend sometime

Detrich 12-23-2009 04:57 PM

cool thanks :)

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 12-23-2009 04:59 PM
