Need to remove spray tint from body panels :(

So today, I decided to get rid of my blacked out taillights. I used standard spray tint for RC cars to coat them. I sprayed some paint remover on them, and it came off pretty easily, but it dripped down all over my bumper, a bit of the side panels, and the trunk lid. I figured it would come off easily, so I didn't think much of it. Now, everything is stained pretty badly. I tried using the same paint remover stuff I initially used, lacquer thinner, Goo Gone, waxing it, and gasoline. Essentially, the only thing I haven't tried is clay barring it, but I have a feeling that won't do much at this point.

Has anyone had a similar experience and have an idea of how to get it off? My poor whitewater pearl look pretty bad now :(

take some pix and post it. maybe wetsanding and buffing with a rotary buffer will work. I'd have to see pix to know tho.

sounds like you got tint mixed into your clear coat, that isnt coming off without sandpaper and respraying the clearcoat.

The remover gelled your clearcoat and some of the tint got into it, sorry.. but it sounds like you're hosed.

Not sure what kind of paint you used but you could try Oops. I used it on my truck when I wife drove against a fence and got white paint down the side. I know it works on latex but not sure about others. Worth a shot though.

that is not going to be cheap to respray especially with a tri stage paint.....or easy to match the color for that matter

Outkast187 08-04-2008 09:24 PM

carb cleaner will do it. Spray on rag, then rub it.

samskillz 08-05-2008 01:28 AM

outkast if that works i love u...sorry on the lack of pics ill get them up tomorow

Outkast187 08-05-2008 08:32 AM

If given the choice, I like the autozone brand the best, it seems to be a little better than gummout brand. Let us know how it works for ya, you should be fine though.

Can't believe you tried laquer thinner, that stuff is pretty hot (like acetone) surprised it didn't take off the clear coat and paint...

Hope the brake cleaner works for you

samskillz 08-05-2008 01:02 PM

aha the lacquer thinner didn't even do anything at all to the car or the lights this has just been a nightmare im going to auto zone right now and if that doesn't work ill get pics and put them up but if it does ill be ecstatic!!

VS8 08-05-2008 01:03 PM

liquid goo gone extreme and a rag takes about 30 min depending on thickness

Coop '04 08-05-2008 01:27 PM

did the laquer thinner dry really fast?

samskillz 08-05-2008 02:03 PM

i tried cropping em and switching them around...iPhones camera is the hardest to work with so i apologize for that...carb cleaner and rubbing compound ( recommended by people at kragen) did not work =(

hope the pictures help...the only thing at this point i think the pictures can do is confirm that im an idiot and im screwed...!! =(

and to the above post...i didnt notice the thinner drying up too fast it seemed to be wet as long i tried until i gave up

Ill be looking at this thread perodcially till i get to the body shop so if anything actually comes up from the pictures ill see it..!!

Thanks to everyone for their input

samskillz 08-05-2008 04:35 PM

$500 and they have to respray em black cause i dissolved the clear coat on the lights and they looked shiity =( overall horrible mistake!

Outkast187 08-05-2008 06:13 PM

Did you try the carb cleaner? Looks like a hella mess, but it can be cleaned up more than that for sure. $500 is too high. Its about a $150 job honestly.....

samskillz 08-06-2008 12:42 AM

150 where and yeh i tried the carb cleaner first thing this morning...i went to the oxnard a city up from mine where everything cheaper and first place the guy said 1000 and went down to 850 my cars WWP so everywhere around here at least is charging a lot more....but damn =( ....its on 4 panels as well...

Outkast187 08-06-2008 09:11 AM

What did it do with the carb cleaner? Did it clean the area at all? I swear I could get that off.....I dunno maybe I just cant see something in the pics, I dunno.

kersh4w 08-06-2008 11:56 AM

that looks stained.

try putting up an ad for a CA WWP rear bumper. if you can pick one up for $300 it'll be cheaper.

samskillz 08-06-2008 05:10 PM

that would work if it was just the bumper but the trunk lid and both side panels i messed everything up...ill bite it and just pay it sucks but damn...

did you try a rotary with good polish or compound? ill try a rotary with a wool pad and a compound first and see what it does. if that dont do it try wet sanding and then hit it with a rotary. did it go through the clear?

Outkast187 08-06-2008 07:45 PM

Oh ya, if you have a buffer its on...hit it with 1500 or 2000 and buff, and you are done. The sides and trunklid should clean up easy, the bumper gets it worse because it can sit and eat into it. If you werent 3000 miles away Id show ya how its done. It looks like childs play to me, I have fixed worse without repaint (as long as clear isnt totally gone, which bodyshop will tell ya it is either way).

see post #2 ;)

Outkast187 08-06-2008 11:17 PM

yea, I saw it from the get go, but I would only suggest that to a buffing noobie as a last resort.

05rex8 08-06-2008 11:32 PM

yeah, I hear ya on that
