How to detail my '8 !

Search but couldnt find detailing steps, so I thought I'd start a new thread and get some definitive answers and steps and it could be stickied to help everyone in the future !

I was hoping for the information on the sequence of detailing, for instance.

1. Wash (maybe with washing up liquid to remove wax?)
2. Dry
3. Clay

And for futher steps, I dont know what goes next. Polishing, Glazing, Sealing, Waxing (pretty sure this is last lol), and Compounds (I'm guessing these are abrasive).

And also added help to each step, I remember someone writing the let the car bake in the sun for and hour or so before buffing wax or polish off, yet some say avoid this at all costs. And some people say they apply '2 or 3 coats' yet I cant quite work out what with ? Polish ? Wax ?

Hope this works well!

Thanks in advance!

1. Wash with Dawn dishwashing detergent to remove all prior wax.
2. Dry with a Chamois or high quality microfiber or cotton waffle towels (in the shade so as to preclude water spotting - or use a deionized water rinse such as the Mr. Clean system).
3. Clay bar, liberally lubricating with detailing spray.
4. Polish with a low abrasive polish, ideally with a random-orbital buffer.
5. Wax with a high quality natural Carnauba or synthetic wax (Meguair's NXT Tech II the latter).

Many folks like Zaino to go the extra mile, but the above will get you very good results.

Never fear, Jedi is here!

Huey has a great process in place, I would recommend something very similar.

1. Wash with Dawn Soap. Do this ONLY to strip off all prior wax/polish. All subsequent washes will be with car wash soap.
2. Dry car completely with microfiber towels. (or chamois)
3. Clay Bar the car. If you've never clay'd a car, it's quite simple. You can lubricate the paint with quick detailer OR use a little bit of car wash soap mixed with water. I like to use Home Depot Spray bottles for this
4. Zaino time! Use either Z5 for dark colors or Z2 for lighter colors. If you're doing multiple coats, always end with Z2
5. Z6 the whole car. Z6 is a quick detailer spray
6. More zaino

7. your'e all done and your car looks better then new.

Little more info for you:

nice. wish i could afford volks lol

so you layer polishes, and protect with a wax or sealant ? i believe z6 or z8 is a sealant yes ?

Jedi54 06-17-2009 03:36 PM

haha, yeah those Volks are pricey little bastards.

Yup, Zaino is intended to layer. Do you have any fine scratches on yours? (swirl marks?)
If so, I'd recommend doing a layer of Z5 tohelp hide those a bit and then finish with a layer of Z2.

Z6 (quick detailer spray) is used in between coats of polish (Z2 or Z5) and then at the end you can use Z8 or just finish with Z6. I usually don't use Z8 unless I'm going to a big Meet / Car Show, or on special ocassions. Trust me, Z6 does an amazing job.

There is a Clear Sealant that they released about a year or two ago, it's quite good but I usually forget to apply it. (it's only intended to be used once or twice a year)

i was looking at the meguiars 3 step pack aswell as clay. would it benefit to layer the meguiars polish also ? and how long to leave between layers

also do you layer wax or is there not a wax as such in the zaino kit?
