How to clean Headliner
 

Person in backseat had a can of pepsi spray my headliner (spots everywhere). What can I use to clean this? I was thinking some kind of foaming cleaner, but not exactly sure....any ideas?

i used simple green...worked great. remember to always test a small section before you do it all..

you could replace the headliner with red suede...:):)

oh and someone want to move this thread to the 'show and shine' section?

You may have to get a new headliner. Dark stains usually don't come out of light colored, textured material. I feel your pain.

update? did anything u used work or not?

Anybody know how much it costs to replace the headliner.

if you need to replace it.. do it yourself and use a diff material.. you'll save money and have a custom job. it's not that hard..just takes a little cutting, glue, and patience.

I would try some type of carpet or upolstry sp cleaner. Some like scotchgard.

For food stains use an oxygen or peroxide based cleaner - doesn't do squat on grease, but works wonders on organic (food) stains. There are a number of them out there. Go to Home Depot and look at their carpet cleaners...for overhead work get a foamy one like Prosolve...

I have the same problem!! Except different. I brought my 8 in for the 5000 mile maintanence thing and when I got it back, there was a black spot on the headliner in two places. :( Almost looks like grease or something of the sort...I was thinking of replacing the headliner with Burberry :rolleyes:

anyone have any other suggestions. i'd had to pick up any kind of carpet cleaner. if there's a particular method to clean it, let me know. i think my stains are from champagne and mud.

There are several good suggestions above - which have you tried so far?

....and you've gotta explain the champagne and mud. Partying in the RX-8 would be a little cramped, but if you're parked I guess you can have all the champagne in there you want. However, I usually find all of my mud on the floors. How did you get mud on the headliner? Was your car upside down?

Or black suede. :)

dont just spray all/multi purpose cleaners in the interior or anywhere else. in the interior i recommend you to dilute the multi purpose clean 1 parts cleaner and 4 parts water in a spray bottle and mix it before spraying. after you spray the 1 or 2 sq ft spot scrub it... and scrub... and scrub... scrub till the stains are gone. then wipe it over with a damp clean cloth and vacuum it dry with a shop vac if you have one. and repeat untill youre finished. you can also use mpc/apc on leather and plastic areas too but make sure you dilute it more (1 part solution 5 parts water or 1/6). on carpet you dont have to dilute it much. also make sure its APC/MPC for autos, dont just go grab some tilex and spray it. costco's multipurpose cleaner works well too.

Try a pencil eraser. It worked on some interior fabric stains I had near the sun visor.

if all else fails, try brake cleaner. but be sure to test it first on a hidden area. that stuff takes out anything

funny that this thread got bumped. this weekend, i cleaned the headliner of most of the champagne that exploded.

i used dual-action resolve carpet cleaner and a sponge. It worked "OK", but it'll probably take another round to get all the stains out. If I had to do it again, I would do it in daylight so I can see the spots that I'm working one. I would also use a spray bottle instead of squeezing some stuff onto a sponge. And I might also use a soft scrub brush vs. a sponge.

the headliner seems sturdy enough to withstand most cleaners so i would guess that simple green, resolve, oxyclean, or anything would work.

talkign about oxy clean. it works freaking great combined with carpet cleaners in the interior!! did you have a party in your car or something? lol.

i wish the story was that exciting. i was in a wedding and was taking some left over champagne back to my place. before we left, the groom wanted to take some dude visiting from japan (a confessed rotary fan) on a test drive. i guess the bottle got a bit shaken up and POP! it exploded all over the car.

i didn't even notice the spots all over the headliner until weeks later.

you can get anything out with the right chemicals and care. You can get tar out of carpets and other tough stains. Get some heavy duty stain remover, and a soft bristle brush, and an air gun (if u have that), one thing tho, its so heavy duty, you will have one clean spot, and the rest of the liner dirty lol. What you can do is take out the headliner, and spend a day off doing the whole thing. Spray down the stain remover, brush the whole thing (it doesnt have to be rough, just quick scrubs) and use the air gun, and the force of the air will push out the majority of the stains. Correct me if im wrong or if its a dumb idea in any way, but thats what / how I would do it, I like to be thorough when it comes to my car :D

I was just thinking to myself about this question yesterday... too funny.

I was looking around the interior of the car and looked at the roof. Then I looked at the size of the headliner (small) then I looked at the size of the door openings (large) and I thought to myself...

SCREW cleaning the headliner! This baby is going to be black suede! BB with black leather.

It really wouldn't be hard for ANYONE with a lil common sense to do it. Time is my problem, would love to see if someone has already done it!
