First time with Buffer

Im borrowing my neighbors buffer machine, to give it a try for the first time. I plan on washing and waxing the car, but not sure if it can be damaging. Do i apply wax and remove wax with the buffer? Also is there anything i should know berore starting...

Any help would be appreciated...

thanks :)

It would probably help to know what type of buffer it is... random orbit, variable speed polisher, etc... It would also help to know what type of wax/polish you intend to use with it.

its a craftsman 10inch buffer with what looks like one speed only (random orbit); im going to use meguires gold class liquid wax.

hope this helps

I'm not too familiar with Craftsman or which model it is. I personally use the Porter Cable (PC) 7424 Random Orbital Polisher. I know for a fact it's safe. If you aren't careful, it might leave nasty swirl marks all over the car if it's not a high-quality machine. Check with your neighbor and do some research on the machine. If you post the exact model, I can look in to it a little for you as well.

here is a link to the 7in. version with specs; there is also a link to the 10in. version but it has a little less info.

With that particular buffer I personally would use a paste wax and hand apply and use the buffer to remove and polish. The removal should be followed with a clean hood applied and go over the finish again to polish to a higher gloss.

But that's just me. I tend to use liquid waxes only for hand waxing and polishing, while leaving the paste waxes for the 2 times a year that I break out the clay bar and buffer for a full day wash and detail day project.
