Clay Bars... best place to buy?

Well I picked up one of those "Mothers Claybar" kits the other day from a local PepBoys, to clear up the overspray that got on my car thanks to the bodyshop's inept employees.

WoW! What a difference! I can't believe how easy it was... wished I knew about claybars with my old Talon.

However I checked all the local auto shops (Discount Auto, Pep Boys, Autozone, etc..) and none of them had anything other than the full Claybar Kit by Mothers.

Are there any other brands? Or more specifically anywhere I can purchase JUST the claybar itself? (Don't need the lub solution or finishing wax personally).

Also picked up a container of Liquid Glass.. so far it looks nice, but not sure it's any better than the Zymol that I've used.. hopefully more durable but only time will tell.

If memory serves me correctly I think I picked up a Meguire's kit at Target. However, as you can see in my other thread I've grown fond of the Mother's Showtime that comes with the claybar. May want to stick with that. Or maybe try to Zaino stuff which you can get online.

Yes, if you want just the clay bars, you'll have to get them online. Zaino sells them here: http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/...duct_Code=Z-18 . Works out to about $10 a bar, once you factor in shipping.

Locally, I've found that the cheapest clay bars are at K-Mart--the Meguiar's clay bar system. $10, as opposed to almost $20 at Pep Boys. That includes the QD, though. If you go that route, be sure to check the boxes before you purchase, as people tend to snatch the clay bars and re-close the packages.

Use enough clay and have an all silver car

I think he is referring to a paint only car...not one with clear coat

since old cars didn't have clear coat instead they had several layers...this way every year a good cleaning should be done on the old cars that literally sands down the paint a bit exposing a fresh finish...then protect with wax

clear coat is very different...clay bars glide much easier over it...but still be careful and use lots of lube

Perhaps clear coat harder than paint, but clay is an abrasive, not a wax. I would use sparingly and very carefully.....

I know I ordered a pack of 3 clay bars by pinnacle I believe, from www.autogeek.net

Yes, any clay bar needs to be used with care. I clay'ed mine shortly after purchasing it, and even on a brand-new car, the difference was noticeably better. With proper usage, a claybar can make a nice improvement in appearance, at least in my experience.

Thanks for all the info guys..

I figured that the clay had to have some sort of abrasive, or it wouldn't pull off the clearcoat that I literally tried to scrub off with everything short of brillo-o and nothing worked.

As for checking the boxes at Kmart, I know exactly what you mean. I opened 3 boxes at Pep Boys since I noticed they were all taped up, and only the 3rd one had the bar inside :(
