Zamp Helmet

Hey guys,

I think I narrowed down my choice for a SA2010 helmet for use in autox this summer.

Right now its narrowed down to the Zamp FSA-2, Its at a price point that cant be touched.

Zamp Website

It is:
Full face
Cheap-$160
Lightweight-3lbs
Nomex interior
Snell SA2010
Matte Black/ White

From what my research has told me... Zamp is the rebrander of Bell Europe

Ive also found out that they are made in China which has got alot of people talking how safe they really are.

I understand why some may feel as though this helmet isnt safe, but I dont see how a helmet could potentially save my life at a autox event, im going slow in a parking lot of cones.

I cant justify spending alot just to satisfy a requirement.

I should be purchasing within this week or the next and will do a follow up after i receive the helmet.

Does anyone know where i can find either a Mazda or Mazdaspeed sticker I can put on my visor??

closed face helmet + summer + sitting in line on a paved parking lot = drink lots of fluids because you will need them

SNELL SA2010 - Check
Good Price - Check
Light Weight - Check

Sounds like a good deal. I'd remove the face shield for use in a car.

I think I have one of these, at least the 2005 version.

Biggest thing is they run small. I had to work with mine a tad. a Large in most any other helmet is an extra large here. The 2010 versions supposedly have more fitment options, but I am not sure how all that works.

For autocross i would care about having the right certification only. You're just running in a parking lot in the end... the event of a collision isn't likely to happen.

A lot of people dont understand why I like open face helmets. But i do for anything other than a dedicated race car that is actually racing wheel to wheel. I like open face helmets for many reasons. Heat and less restrictive sight lines are only two of them.
For auto X and Hpde's, open faced helmets are my choice.
This helmet looks like a good choice for your purpose, if you want a closed face one.

full face for full race. Hitting an airbag with a closed face helmet isn't exactly fun...

The last helmet I used racing was a Bell open face. Years later, I used it for track days until it became too old and the soft foam started deteriorating. Now I have a full face because I got a good deal.

hitting any airbag with any sort of helmet isn't fun.... there are downsides for each style of helmet from what I recall of the study I read waaay way back.

Im using this one right now and its been pretty good. I took the face shield off for ventalation. My incar temp maybe got to 85 (guessing from sweat) and it was fine. My head was dryer than my chest.

Thanks guys for the input! Ill be ordering the XXL since ive been hearing to get the next size up, i can always add alittle more padding if its not super snug.

Too bad the XXL only comes in white, maybe ill get bored and paint it or something, I tested putting clear over plastidip and it comes off so any attempt with spray paint that fails i can peel right off using plastidip as the base coat.

any idea on how to get a mazda sticker or something like that for the visor? I could do it myself but it requires me buying blank stickers, and it would only be one solid color.

Yeah, that was in October. With our altitude we can get some pretty high heat in the summer, but are spared the humidity.

Lol-- I know.
One year at Road Atlanta in july the ambient temp was 115F Humidity was 70-80% or so. The track surface was 150F+ and no lie--my alternator belt melted. The edges melted and it cause one of the ribs to fly off. Seriously--it was hot. I drank 2 liters of water before 2 pm and I never had to use the bathroom. I will never do that again.
Then the poor guys that were racing and in full driving suits were really suffering. The cars held up better than we did.

Still not as hot as Texas World Speedway in August. Usually have at least one driver per event transported to the hospital for heat injuries and/or dehydration. Thankfully new mgt saw it fit to finally get the date moved around for that event.... ugh. You know its bad when you roll into the track at 7:30am and the temp is already too damn close to triple digits...

As far as helmet decoration, I've seen a few sites like these that I might try with one of my helmets:
http://www.harrisdecals.com/products...etehelmets.asp

much less expensive than helmet painting, which can get spendy very very quick....

That would have probably done me in. I can deal with dry heat pretty well, but have struggled in humidity. An open face helmet would make me no difference at that or TX temps. Just drink beer so the delirium hides the agony.

Fast shipping from saferacer.com

I live in NJ, and I ordered from them on sunday(5th), item sent out on monday(6th) and arriving thursday(8th)

According to FedEx, my total package weight is 5.9lbs, so Im starting to think the 3lb model was another helmet from Zamp, either way, with the coupon i found online it came to $181 for the helmet and extra visor.

Alright got my helmet, With the lovely price i got even lovelier screws, NOT. The screws that secure the shield in place suck horse *** and almost got stripped, each time you play with them they strip down about 20%.

After getting frustrated with the replacement shield not being held in tight i opted to just use a washer from my basement instead and worked like a charm, although.....

After seeing a few pictures, it seems as though alot of different helmets even Arai have the same type of washer, so is what i did against regulation? The washer that came with the helmet made the screw not have any protruding edges and my washer alternative creates an edge.

Im on my last 20% right now and will have to fabricate some kind of tool that doesnt strip these screws if i have to take this shield off, so i really hope i dont have to.

If i plastidip the screws and washers to make them black, would no one be the wiser upon quick examination?

Thanks.
