Understeer problem
Hey guys, I just had a question. I have a staggerd setup on my tires because I got them used at the time I bought my rims. I only did this because thats all that was available at the time and the guy gave me the tires for free. 235 in the front and 275 rear. I know it's a really big diff. My question is, I might be going to streets of willow this Nov. and because I don't want to understeer, would it fix or help at all if I just bout a rear sway? I don't have an after market swaybar right now, but I was thinking about buying the H&R rear sway. If not then would it just be best for me to get new tires, 255 all around?

don't know all that much about autocross or tracking. but if you are suffering from understeer, a stiffer rear sway would give you even more understeer. you'll need a front.
it would be best to go with same tire size all around if you can. |

ahh my bad. haha. at least i got one of two right. :)

The understeer you have now is caused by the staggered tire setup. Buy the new 255 tires. Don't try to fix the original problem by making changes in a different place to correct for it.
The wide rear tires are useful for 2 reasons. First for looks. And second for if you significantly increased the HP of your engine and needed the traction. Now you want to track the car, you need a symmetrical setup. Are your wheel widths equal front/rear or are they staggered also? |
absoulutely correct alnielsen. Buy the same size tires, your dsc and tcs and abs will be all the more happy also. not only that with the same size tires you can rotate them. i also would not advise a bigger size than a 245 if you are running 8" rims. Others run wider than that but I like the sidewall support theory.

If they are staggered, then it would probably be cheapest to by a new rear bar. That wouldn't be the best answer, it would be the cheapest to cut down on understeer.

Hell, don't woory about it.
It's your first time on the track. Just drive and have fun. |
If it is your first time, I suggest you to do a wheel alignment and have fun. Slow in fast out.

If you're doing lots of track days, why not put some R compounds on your stock wheels and use those on the track?
