My 2nd gear syncro is getting tired...unless I rev match perfectly it grinds more than it should. The super light clutch/FW doesn't help....it magnifies any rev errors because it falls off so fast I guess that explains why my transmissions have never had any grinding issues :dunno: the previous trans failures were all a result of the integral 2nd gear on the countershaft stripping all the teeth off on 1-2 upshifts. I have 2 sitting in the garage in this condition. A 3rd one is a high mileage whiner I bought off the forum and keep around as a backup. Also have a 4th Mazda dealership rebuilt trans that I bought back in 2006 but have been reluctant to try and see how long it will last. If I tear down the whiner in the car my only plan is to replace the bearings. It never whined before the last event. I would rather tear it down now than chance another catastrophic failure. Mazda charges a fortune for parts. |
No offense taken. You realise that the S2000 has just as many if not more transmission problems than the RX8, right?
A car that you're going to take right off the showroom floor and then run HARD at the track with no problems is hard to find. I would go with a Miata if you want minimal problems.

New motor twice, new trans, required significant updated cooling. That doesn't sound like the mark of a ready to go track car. I'm not planning to do endurance racing just 4-5 twenty minute session DE's, maybe some autocross and time trial stuff. I don't want to ever have to replace an engine, transmission or any other component. I'm fine with doing small stuff like replacing coils/wires etc. For the price of a really ragged out S2000 you can get a pretty nice considerably lower miles RX-8 which is swaying my decision right now. |
Arrive-and-drive is what you need if you can afford it. Otherwise, you'll be spending a lot of time on preventative maintenance. You know it's a slippery slope.

Funny you say that. Just got this picture from a friend who tracks a 2011 Mustang - Ford Racing sway bar bracket broken, then loose sway bar pierced the oil filter...

An RX8 is problematic on many levels and it takes a lot of experience and expertise to stay on top of them all. A lot of owners have issues that go unrecognized. Its not a vehicle I'd recommend to just anyone.
