Anyone else running without a rear swaybar? I just tried it for the first time last event and have decided that rear swaybar is STAYING off the car. I know Mike liked it (topgear) but anyone else? I was really surprised at the difference.

Packwood was a tight race for the top spots. It was a very sweeper-intensive course which was very fun to drive.
This was the first event all season where my car was working reasonably well, and I was happy to have my co-driver take the win, and for me to take thrid, so close to Joe & Shaikh. Well, kind of happy.
Conditions well all over the place over the two days, but STX was lucky to race in dry/drying conditions on Sat/Sun.
As for running without a rear bar, I've been doing that for two years now, but I'm about to put one back on. Without the rear bar, my car puts down power extremely well right now (helped by the FatCats for sure) but I'm going to experiment a bit with alignment settings that will require additional rear roll stiffness, and the quickest way to do that is to bolt a rear bar on, so...

Guys without rear sway bars, are you using a bigger front bar? Or just stock up front?
My "partner in crime" around here with a pretty similarly-prepped car has a big front bar and no rear bar, compared to my stock bars front and rear. I like driving both setups but I'm always open to try new things.
Both of us are on KW V3's with OTS rates.

Well, it's all about roll rates and roll couple.
If you have a well balanced car and detach the rear sway, the car is going to push and you have to compensate somehow (most commonly by increasing the rear spring rate). If you detach the rear bar and simultaneously add a big front bar, it's going to push even more.
I've never run a big front bar - the biggest I've used is a Whiteline, which is about 70% stiffer than stock. I'm running the stock front bar right now, but that's more due to circumstance than anything else (although it seems to be working fairly well for me).
If I was in a situation where I was stuck on soft spring rates for whatever reason, then yes, I'd run big bars.

Congrats to you and Shaikh. Your car looked great on course. Sorry you couldn't get the win but I know the feeling.
I already told you guys what I saw with the F/R balance. It was a pretty dramatic difference.

Well I mean I'm running in BSP but just wanted to see what you guys were doing. I have 730 lb springs front and and 450 lb springs rear, 32mm hollow bar up front, no bar rear for last event. Custom valved Ohlins DFV shocks. The R comps are 255/35/18 on a 18x9+35. Front and rear Mazdaspeed strut bars as well.
-2.8 camber in the front, with .05 toe out, 4.1 caster, and then the rear has -2 camber, and 0 toe.
I jacked up the dampening in the front to 8 clicks from stiff, and 20 clicks from stiff in the rear. It felt really good and I could definitely get the power down, and only a few spots where I pushed, but really not too much, so I can't complain. I guess when the day of the test and tune comes, I'll have to play with swaybar/dampening settings.

Don't know if Joe is on here or not but . . .
Joe, this is Tom Deady, you used to work at FTI in Tukwila with my brother Brock and gave me some tips on my first pro.
Thanks again and congrats on the results so far!

Like the NT, a tight battle for the top spot, and again, second for Joe and third for me.
The right course was without a doubt the most horsepower-intensive solo-style course I have run on. Three strong pulls on the throttle to near-redline in second with two big sweepers in about 27 seconds. Then, it was finished by a very tight slalom, which was very tricky because you had to give up so much speed. I really only got the finish slalom right once on the right (wich was my best time by 0.5 seconds) and never on the left. It's too bad because that was without a doubt the .15 seconds I needed for the win.
The left overall was a slightly tighter course.
I'm happy with how the car is performing, and my driving (to a lesser extend, LOL). I've never been so close to Joe in the past, including when I co-drove with him in his car at nats in BS. I did make the challenge (26th spot) but had to depart so I gave my spot up.
Congrats to Joe and to Shane. It was a fun battle.

The latest September Fastrack notes this in the tech bulletins section:
"1. Stock: Per the SAC, the provisions of 13.9.A do not allow for modifications to the existing factory wiring harness or the addition of brackets for mounting alternate coils. (5420)"
I don't recall anything further about coils being mentioned in the ST rules, so does this now eliminate the BHR kit from legality in STX?

^The way I read it, yes.
You could argue that the plug-n-play harness is legal, since we are not modifying the factory harness, but the bracket that comes with the kit to wich the coils mount is clearly illegal, based on the way I read it.
Of course, I'm open to other interpretations.
And, since this is a tech bulletin, it's effective NOW, so that means I have to switch back to OEM for nats.
Thanks for catching this, I'll be calling Mazdacomp in the morning...

There's an ongoing discussion on RRAX on the same topic. I've added some input along with some other autocrossers (mostly in stock class).

This was my latest opinionated post. Part of it is in response to someone asking if you could use the BHR coils without the bracket by way of zip ties:
I'm sure some will disagree.

I think the SCCA is trying to eliminate the use of some crazy bracket that mounts coils a foot away from the original position for whatever reason. The BHR bracket, or "mounting plate" as I would probably label it, only exists to put the coils in the same position as OE, which I'm sure they thought would be good enough for any rule set.
The BHR coils do not have a place to use the original studs that the OE coils mount to, so it would be a rats nest of zip ties and they still wouldn't really be firmly mounted to anything. I don't see any way of mounting these coils in the same method as the OE coils unless they had an entirely different housing.
The mounting plate facilitates installation of a VERY popular reliability upgrade. I would argue that it certainly fits within the "spirit of the rules" and would have a hard time taking anyone seriously that wanted to protest it.

I started a thread at SCCA forums, but no replies yet.
Honestly, this seems very cut & dry to me. The BHR kit is more than a plate with some coils - it uses standoffs, and uses special formed pieces that connect the coils to the mounting plate. It's an additional bracket that is explicitly forbidden. I talked to a STAC member on the phone about this tonight and he eventually agreed with my interpretation even though he initially was trying to "make it work" (although his opinion should not be taken as official).
I'm going to nats in a week, and will almost certainly replace my BHR kit with OEM colis before I go, and will protest anyone who has the BHR kit (and is faster than me, LOL). Not trying to be an ******* but that's how it is.

George- Where is the "additional" bracket "explicitly" forbidden? I see a tech bulletin that explictly addresses "alternate" brackets.
The zip tie suggestion was mine put up with no real forethought; there is no effective diffeence between zip ties and the BHR clips/bracket.
The argument against it seems to rest on the fact that there are multiple "pieces" to the kit. If the clips, coils and bracket were bonded together into one piece, it seems to me that they would unquestionably be legal b/c it would all be "part" of the coil.
