So I have a Problem....

I don't wanna call this a setup issue as I'm sure I could have done something better, but the car defiantly lacks some steady state grip in the rear end.

Below I'm attaching a video of an Auto-x at Warminster yesterday, the first half of the course was very technical and i screwed up on the offset slalom right before the braking box but other than that Run 4 was not all that bad, Until....

The back half of the course was gut check, usually not an issue for me...
There was a very high speed section after the Chicago Box toward the last 1/4 of the course. The video I clipped together has every runs attempt at the section:

Run 1: Balls to the Wall shifted to 3rd gear around the second pointer cone all over.
Run 2: 3rd gear again, light braking dog ass slow through it, broke too late for the right hander.
Run 3: 3rd gear again, oversteer corrected broke too late as a result.
Run 4: 2 gear kept it at 9k didn't bounce it off the limiter, more oversteer tank slapped some cones.

Run 4 was a 47.6 even with that mess up, without it i would have been around a mid 45 to low 46, which is right about where i would expect myself to be among my competitors.

http://www.polakgraphics.com/images/Warminster.mpg.MP4 Runs best in quicktime or VLC media player.

Watching the STU evo and stis they were flat out through the section....
For the last run i was at full soft compression in the rear, and 1 rotation rebound (out of 3.5), but since none of you have Variants i guess that a little rhetorical.

what are your spring rates, what sway bars/settings, and where did you have the front shocks set at ...

PoLaK 06-18-2007 01:44 PM

455 Front Linear
285 Rear Progressive

Sways are stock, have the progress ones sitting in the garage waiting to go on, would like to learn to drive the current setup to near its potential before blaming it on the sways.

Rebound in the front was at 1 turn (also out of 3.5) and compression at .75.

Quicktime or VLC media player, WMP doesn't like H264.

scsi 06-18-2007 02:18 PM

my error message says

Error -2048: the file is not a movie file

update your codecs or get VLC, vlc is by far the best player available on the net.

Oooo you are NOT going to hear the end of this one...

TeamRX8 06-18-2007 04:52 PM

lol, welcome to my world ala 2006

a) you should have cranked up the front rebound as high as possible

b) you need to get those PT bars installed

The rear spring rate seems high relative to the front, but the progressive deal is a bit of a mystery to me since I have no direct experience with them. In general though, with the OE bars you'll be getting a lot of roll in the rear suspension which is going to kick it into the higher rate range of the rear springs. You also need to verify that the rear shocks are not bottoming out under high G loads, which will be much less likely with the stiffer PT bars.

What rear tire air pressure were you running?

Mark

PoLaK 06-18-2007 05:21 PM

i was running between 26-27 psi depending on what run in the rear.
I'm afraid that more front rebound would have made me understeer around the turnaround/loop. Front end felt flickable and grippe in the slaloms

TeamRX8 06-18-2007 05:35 PM

Then install the bars, there's no point wasting tuning time on the OE bars if you already have the others and are intending to use them.

I suppose i will, i kept them off as a educational experience for myself, but perhaps its time they go on.

Watching vids and talking to some guys alot of people hit the brakes after the second pointer cone in the chute going into that left hander.

However here is a video of someone who didn't, coincidently he was 2nd fastest, this was the line i was seeking, he broke about 10 yards from the yellow X on the ground also what i was attempting to do.

perry (driving dan's car) was only a couple tenths faster than dan who braked in the chute... there wasn't a massive amount of time to be gained there given the righthand offset was designed to slow you down prior to the finish.

Its too bad perry's fastest run wasn't recorded, i overlayed his posted video with dan's fastest, and dan gains significantly on him from start to turn-around where the gap stabilizes. Would have like to have seen if dan remained superior to perry on the technical section and then perry made up the difference on the second half.
Even still, the car felt like it should be able to do what i was asking :(
made for some cool pictures tho:

back from europe and progress bars are finally on will see tomorrow at the same location i originally had this problem at.

post the progress bar install on some spirited street testing it feels as if i'm understeering on corner entry and then oversteering on exit, but it could also be that i'm simply not used to asking the front end of so much grip; i.e. car feels like its understeering slightly but rather than unwinding the wheel and correcting i ask more from it turn in more and it obeys....

Did you have a similar sensation post the install sipe?

Middle hole up front/soft back.

TeamRX8 08-20-2007 02:21 PM

think shocks for corner entry/exit and swaybar/springs for mid corner/sweepers

well this Sunday proved to be less educational then i would have liked.
It rained so rebound and comp. just went to full soft in the rear and while the front chattered in the tighter sections, i managed to squeak out a raw time that was actually quite good (4th out 13) and it would have beat out most of the AWD competition (claps) but I ended up with a cone call which kinda blew.

Oversteer was kept in check but only because i wasn't flicking the car through the slaloms, would like to see if i was more aggressive with the turn-in in the dry if the tail still wants to come out; it definitely wanted to in the wet.
