Video: RX-8 vs. race-prepped BMW E30 M3 at VIR full course
Spent the weekend at VIR doing some instructing. Went out in the instructor group on Sunday and found somebody to play with. :D: The driver is a great guy and we had fun bench racing after this session. Always fun to put the beat-down on some well-prepped and well-driven machinery with my little 1.3 liter. Thought you guys might enjoy watching.
Mods on my car are Koni sports, Progressive not-stiff-enough springs, MS front anti-sway bar, modified stock rear bar, Hawk HP+ pads up front, HPS in the rear, and Hoosier R6 tires with 17 heat cycles on stock rims. More details in the description of the video and HD 720p version if you click through to youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86s7sKKZWxI&fmt=22 |
nice run!
The 240Z was annoying, the car came out of the pits and had to race me side by side into 1 and 2 rather than backing off. I have no idea why he was in our group. |
Nice !!! Sick track !!!
|
that track look real fun to drive, a lot of high speed corners, hearing that 9k beeb through the S turn makes my hands sweaty......lol, very smooth......
|
Thanks guys. It is a great track. The Uphill Esses might well be the best combination of high-speed "flowing" turns in the Easern US.
|
that all season tire joke is so funny...lol
|
nice vid. Just went up to VIR a week ago for the first time. It is an amazing track to say the least.
|
Thanks!
If that was with MazdaDriverS.com, I probably teched your car. I was the VR in the instructor's group, sometimes running with Red and Yellow groups. Number "X4" and loud exhaust. pictures are up at F&S website: http://www.fandsenterprises.com/vircar.htm |
What a beautiful track!

Now that was 8 minutes of fun!
I'd have been there 'Bolt, but for 3 days of "spankin' the Wankel" at Watkins Glen the week before. No suction cup camera mounts once again, and I forgot to put the stealth mount down in the radiator inlet for that 'centipede's view" footage. Shen on the 2nd with TrackDaze? |
Hey Tim! Three days on da Glen? Wow! That's a fast track though the "Blue Shit" is a little intimidating in a couple places. I crashed into the "laces" of The Boot (turn 6) in my Spec RX-7 a few years ago.
A shame you didn't get any video. That would have been great to see! I like the radiator grill camera mount idea. I'll have to do that with one of my cameras next time out. I'll definitely be out with TrackDaze in October. Already signed up. Got to get out there for a rematch against Scott Blair in his E36 M3. He kicked my butt last time but I put up a good fight! http://vimeo.com/11855710 Hey, Mazda Sports Car Club of Washington is running an autocross on October 17th at Bowie, don't forget. |

No, I didn't see much of it on track. :yelrotflm Day 3 was interesting, as in "Is there a track under that river?". Nothing matches rounding the "Laces", gently pushing more throttle and feeling the car start twitching when it hits sheets of water streaming across the downhill chute to the "Heel". Session started with a few drops falling on 18 cars, hit a torrential downpour just after the "Bus Stop", and it kept bucketing down for a good 10-12 minutes. http://www.goeaston.net/~bowsertb/im...I_BLW_2725.jpg Session ended with just three cars circulating: a Subaru WRX, a black track-prepped RX-8, and me. The lead instructor was shaking hands at pit-in, congratulating those of us who, in his words, "decided to learn the art of driving". http://www.goeaston.net/~bowsertb/im...t-the-Glen.jpg I was soaked, shivering, and still had an ear-to-ear grin. :) |
