road atlanta lap times

im intrested in seeing what other people have done lap time wise in there rx8 at road atlanta. we just ran the 14hr road atlanta chumpcar race in our rx8 4 port auto and did a 153.698 which i think is not to bad for it being a 4-port auto with all stock suspension and 280 compound tires.

anyways just post up what you have done at road atlanta in your street car or track car

etzilon 02-09-2015 09:40 AM

I ran a 1:42 and easily left about 5 seconds on the table.

kbrewmr2 02-09-2015 11:18 AM

Road Atlanta PBs - Old Mk2 MR2 NA - 01:52.749. ~2700-2750lbs with driver, 205/225 Toyo RA1s, stock otherwise around 117whp/130lbft. Newer Mk2 MR2 NA 01:50.652 - 2685lbs with driver, 205/225 Hoosier R6s, 120whp/127wlbft and laptime was ran in late August heat.

53s is probably room for some improvements considering alot more power, similar weight, better suspension and probably closer than you think pure tire grip with the speed that can still be found out of "street" tires these days with extra width also helping to close the gap against a narrow r-comp. Bet you could gain some time with clear track and some curb-hopping that most people typically don't see or don't seem to tend to do during endurance races.

If you have some video, especially any that you can overlay some MPH and g-force information onto, I bet we could coach you through a few spots to find some time.

I haven't run my R3 there but from the times I have between my old MR2 race car and some Time Trials times I have from the R3 both on common tracks I think I could better the MR2 race car's time at Road Atlanta on the Continental DWs I usually have on the car... that track would flow better into the relative strenghts of the newer car.

coolcars44 02-09-2015 02:54 PM

chumpcar only allows tires 180 compound tread or higher we just have not used anything softer than a 280 compound due to cost.and i dont think we ever had a clean run out of traffic with 93 cars on track you never get a perfect clean run.

is that rx8 you ran a 1.42 a 6 speed manual?what tires and mods do you have?

i think i can get 3-5 seconds off the laps times on our rx8 with a much better tourqe convertor from level 10 so when we shift into 3rd gear the car wont fall out of the power band.thats really the main issue we have right now when we shift from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th the rpms drop to low.but we are going to get that fixed soon

etzilon 02-12-2015 11:50 PM

Yes. 6-speed with a fairly fresh engine, decent suspension and treadwear 40 tires.

bulletproof21 02-13-2015 10:23 AM

^ and youre in TTC right? how much weight have you taken out of your car Etzillon?

TeamRX8 02-13-2015 02:24 PM

^^He takes a handful of ex-lax the night before a race just to make sure he's at the absolute minimum the next day ..

etzilon 02-13-2015 11:04 PM

Team: Creepy! How do you know about it?

Last year, 2,880 lbs was my comp weight (ie weight after a session with driver in the car)

TeamRX8 02-14-2015 09:51 AM

Wow, thought you were less than that. Guess the cage and other safety gear adds up.

etzilon 02-14-2015 10:38 AM

The cage was built with safety as primary goal, so it is not the lightest around. Depending on what I had for dinner, I'd be around 200 lbs +/- 10 lbs with racing gear (suit, helmet, HANS, etc). I also have 60 lbs of lead in the car... I still need a full tank of gas before a session to make sure i make minimum weight.

coolcars44 02-20-2015 03:06 PM

well we have decided to go with a 6 port motor now and swap over to a manual trans.we finally have the funds to swap it all over.im really intrested now to see what kind of time we do at road atlanta next time we go.im sure we will be in the mid 1:40s

Marcos 03-23-2015 09:25 PM

A few weeks late, but I'll be glad to get back in the drivers seat once the swap is complete. Two race days with the auto was interesting.

Those times with drop greatly.

coolcars44 04-12-2015 08:20 PM

car is now a 6 port 6 speed manual actually both cars are 6 speed 6 port cars and we now run 200 compound nitto tires and car is at least 10-15 seconds faster now

RacerBowie 04-13-2015 07:02 AM

If you are 15 seconds faster I'll buy the car. That would be 38s, which there's just no way in hell.

kbrewmr2 04-13-2015 11:09 AM

going from 2:15 to 2:00 requires less effort than going from 1:45 to 1:30....

TeamRX8 04-13-2015 01:58 PM

I was just going to post that 15 seconds is a lot ...

coolcars44 04-13-2015 05:29 PM

i said 10-15 sec when we go back to road atlanta next year i will see what we can get the car to do if i hit the 138s i will message you how much i want for the car..........

we went from 158 to 153 in the auto car from just removing the roof off the car.since then we have gone 6 port manual and 200 compound tires from the hard 420 compound all season tires we had im sure we can do 10 seconds faster but i will know for sure once we go back there.but we will see

just so you know what you will be buying lol not sure if you knew it was a topless car or not hahaha

RacerBowie 04-14-2015 12:20 PM

Yeah, I know the car. I've passed it (and/or it's predecessor) enough times at Rd. Atl. to get a feel for it... in my 95hp Honda Civic. (is there an emoticon for :BURN!!!!:?)

To be more forthright and leave the internet snark behind, dropping 15 seconds from the 1:53s you were doing to 1:38s at Road Atlanta is a big, BIG ask. I can see you guys doing 45s and 46s, MAYBE the occasional 44. Much below that is going to require a very very well-sorted suspension, great drive out of the corners, and BEEG MOTAH! Then to do it on 200TW tires...

For reference, I've got an half-assed EP RX-8. It weighs about 2650 with driver. It makes around 190 or so whp (hasn't been dynoed). I run 225/45-17 Continental castoff hard compound slicks (which are 2ish seconds per lap faster than 200TW tires of the same size, by my very brief testing last year out of curiosity). I've also got probably 10,000 miles at Road Atlanta and a handful of competitive amateur championships. The best I've managed so far is a 1:41.074. I think there's a 39.x in that car as it is currently prepped with getting some more oversteer out of it. 38s on "real" slicks.

38s is really really really fast there.

I felt good and all.

kbrewmr2 04-15-2015 10:06 AM

Bowie probably has somewhere in the neighborhood of I'll guess 5,000 laps there. I know it has to be over 1k by alot, but it's probably not 10k yet.

I'd look at it more in terms of average speed increases - that may illustrate to you the concept we are trying to tell you.

In simple easy math terms:
2:00 to go 2 mi = 60mph average speed
1:45 to go 2 mi = 68mph average (+8 mph to drop 15 sec)
1:30 to go 2 mi = 80mph average (+12mph to drop 15 sec)
1:15 to go 2 mi = 96mph average (+16mph to drop 15 sec)
1:00 to go 2 mi = 120mph average (+24mph to drop 15 sec)

some times from this thread at that track:
1:53 at Road Atlanta is 80.92mph averaqe if my math is right
1:50 is 83.13mph avg
1:45 is 87.09mph avg
1:42 is 89.65mph avg
1:40 is 91.44mph avg
1:38 is 93.31mph avg

coolcars44 04-16-2015 09:18 PM

thanks for all the thoughts and info but we will see how much faster we are from the 153 we did in the car as a 4 port auto.

TeamRX8 04-16-2015 11:46 PM

Well it was your own words that started this down that path ;)
