Racing for tall people -- helmet advice
So I've been tracking the 8 for a couple of years now, and at 6'1" I *just* fit if I play with the seat enough. At today's first track outing of the year I realized that either the car shrank or I grew, because I had a lot of trouble fitting. This is a GT with sunroof.
So question is: is there anyone here who is in a similar situation and found a helmet that is just small enough to clear the roof? Is there such a thing as a low-profile helmet? Thanks |
There is a thread that talks about lowering the seat by adjusting the mounting bolts. Either that of buy a new seat. I have the same trouble I fit but I would like to get closer to the steering wheel and not have to stoop in my seat.

I drive a 2004 sport model, cloth unpowered seats, with the seat base full down, seat back is reclined, but not enough to relieve me from my helmet just grazing the roof. The reason I can't go any further back is the door latch relief in the ceiling; my helmet keys against it, and if I go any further back with the seat, my head gets pushed to the right. Short of rebuilding the seat rail rear attach points, it's the best I can do. |
here you go, gained me almost an inch of head room.

Very interesting, especially the comment about unpowered seats. I happen to have a spare set of those, and can take a good look at the process outside the car.
Thanks for the tip!:icon_tup: |
Thanks guys, I'll try out the seat mount hack. Glad I'm not the only one. Still, any advice on helmets welcome.

i have the zamp fsa 2.. i think.
it was only 160.00, only to be used for autocross so i dont care about its safteyness, though it is snellSA2010 rated. its...rather large... but its my first helmet so i dont have anything to compare it to. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5...0/IMAG0689.jpg The seat mod is exactly what i needed. Contact 04Green if you have any questions/ are having difficulty, he helped me immensely throughout the course of the 2 days it took me to figure it out(i was having trouble adding 2+2...the mod is not that hard) |
You can also gain about half an inch by taking out the seat then removing the seat cushion and cutting out some of the foam from the bottom. This will let you sit lower in the seat and as long as you don't touch the top of the foam the seat look exactly the same you just sink into it a little bit more.

6'0 with a very long torso in a GT with a sunroof. I tried one of the ZAMP helmets ($150) at first and, ignoring the fit/finish/feel, it seemed to take up a lot more room than the Geforce Eliminator Pro ($~240) I ended up going with. The Pro Eliminator is a great helmet, better IMO than the Bell Sport that I thought fit perfectly after using one for four years. I do bump the roof liner a bit but still end up finding my seat in a more upright and forward position after a track day than I normally have it set on the street. Also, I recommend apex performance for your helmet buy. They worked on my tight schedule and shipped the Geforce before I paid the difference or return-shipped the Zamp. You should be able to find a 10% coupon through google or PM me and I'll give you one.
