NASA members... what class are you running :)

SO I am an SCCA guy at heart but I would be interested in running an event if a bunch of RX8's got together. What class are you guys running in? And how did you asses your modifications?

I think I would be in PTC at 2935lbs Below you will see how this was calculated.
The RX8 BTM (Base Trim Model) classes the car in PTD at 3045lbs
I have the following "modification and Point Assessment score: 39 total points which moves us Up ONE class to PTC per the table found on page 17 in the 2013 Performance Touring class rules
The following is a list of points that we were assessed found on pages 17-22
  • +10 points for running Hoosier R6 tires.
  • +1 point for a modified intake
  • +1 point for modified Pulleys on the engine
  • +2 for a modified Header
  • +2 for a modified exhaust past the Cat
  • +1 for removing the Cat
  • +10 for the shocks (This one kinda stinks since I have 15 way adjustable shocks, if I am reading that rule correctly... Page 20 Section E.Suspension 1).....
  • +2 for coil-overs and modified springs
  • +2 for sway-bars
  • +8 for being below the minimum weight for the car (-110lbs) Basically the way I read this table on page 18 is that we can "use up" our modification points that have not been used within our class limits by lowering our minimum weight. Since our modifications total up to 31 points we have an extra 8 points that we can use to lower our weight on the car. simple as that! 3045lbs - 110lbs = 2935lbs
A few other things to note that I LOVE that are not SCCA ITR legal but legal in NASA Performance Touring
  • Transmission modified to 2009 version (Page 30)
  • Lightweight flywheel (Page 24)
  • Differential Cooler (Page 25)
  • ABS!

Most of us NASA guys have been using dyno reclass - see here: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-racing-...5/#post4430608

Depending on the health of your engine, it might make sense to dyno reclass. Otherwise, your point calc looks good.

Thanks for the thread, however now I am even more confused than ever! I will try and digest it all tomorrow :)

I take it PT is wheel to wheel and TT is Time Trials?

Do most people in NASA do the Dyno reclass option? Seems to me that Dyno's vary a bit from user to user...

Most NASA people running RX8s end up doing a dyno reclass as it is believed that the base class assumes a stock horsepower level that's high compared to what we typically see.

It's a rotor head thing.

Stephen, no wonder you are faster than me. You have a Cheater Car!:wavey::wavey:

You have to take points for the '09 tranny. It has a different gear ratio.

Have you had the car dyno'd? etzilon, they assume more HP than most of us get. I can help you send in, but you have to have a dyno sheet. You probably would get enough points back to stay in "C" with the tranny and some weight points back.

The adjustments don't matter. For some reason they decided to change the rules a couple years ago and penalize shocks that have an external reservior. Ridiculous but it is what it is. What kind of shock asorbers are you using? Do the have external reserviors?

Most of us run in PTD or PTC.

We had a nice field of three RX-8s in PTD and one in PTC at the last Southern California NASA race.

Barely different ratio but different none the less. I'm trying very hard to get Greg to to change all non R3 model RX-8s of ALL years to PTD (no stars) and list them as just one group. This would allow swapping of parts between all years at no penalty.

Good luck with that, seriously. He was EMPHATIC with me about the Tranny. It's a longevity improvement, not a performance enhancement. But he seemed to have very strong opinions on this.

Adjustments do take points.

E. SUSPENSION:
1) Non-BTM shocks/struts/dampers with an external reservoir or more than two ranges of adjustment—must still take
points for springs below +10 (example: compression (bump) and both high & low rebound adjustments).

kbrewmr2 03-15-2013 10:57 AM

note that it's ranges of adjustments - a Tein 48-way or whateverthehell only has 2 actual ranges of adjustment. A Moton triple where it's separate knobs for high & low speed compression as well as one more for rebound - that's three. Sounds like the OP's shocks are the more basic type, and that E3 for just 3 points would apply

I would also recommend doing a dyno reclass. You're not required to use it if it turns out to be a detriment to you in the end.

Makes sense. I'm not sure what Stephen is running.

Stephen

yes. they both use the same rules, though so that means if you're in PTD, you're in TTD, and uncle Jerry will happily let you run both in a weekend. although you do have to submit the TT paper and the PT paper to the appropriate people.

we won in TT a couple times last year just because the guy who got first never turns in his car classification form!
