Hey, it was a 2:16 (point seven-eight), but there is definitely room for me to improve :-)

blu3dragon 07-14-2015 06:01 PM

Worth adding:

Laguna Seca - 1:50.42, 2009 R3, bone stock driven by Randy Pobst - 2009 Mazda RX-8 Laguna Lap - Motor Trend

Loki 07-26-2015 09:36 PM

Le bump while adding a new entry from this weekend. Sanair, small track outside of Montreal.

Buttonwillow #13CW

2:12.50 R3, 245/45/17 Pilot Super Sports, Hawk HP+, stainless lines, RB midpipe, catback & intake, 90-95* ambient
2:08.80 R3, 245/45/17 Kumho V710, Hawk HP+, stainless lines, RB midpipe, catback & intake, 90-95* ambient

I think there's a bigger delta between the PSS and the V710s, but it was my first weekend on r-comps and I was dialing it up slowly since I don't know the breakaway characteristics of the tire yet. Between traffic and ECT was getting up to 230+, I wasn't able to push it towards the end of the day. Oh well... Now to go find more cooling capacity... ... ...

oh - still haven't fixed 3rd gear :(.

Nice, so that's a 3s improvement off your previous time on PSS and then almost another 4s with the V710!
I'll be at Thunderhill next month on 15/16 and maybe laguna seca on the 17th if I can swing it. Let me know if you feel like a drive up north :)

Buttonwillow #13CW - 2:13:233 my second time. Lots of room for improvement...

2005 RX-8 Shinka and temperature all day was around 78 - 81 degrees.

HKS Hi-Power, BHR mid-pipe, AEM intake, and TurboXS header.

Hankook Ventus V12 255/40/18 on Enkei 18x9.5 +27 NT03+M all around. (I will be switching to 17x9.5" RPF1 on 255/40/17 Federal RS-R or Hankook RS3 soon.)

StopTech Street Performance Pads on stock rotors with stock brake lines. ATE Super Blue for fluid.

Koni Yellow sport shocks paired Progress Technology springs and sway bars front and back.

Haha... it's an oversized rotary Miata! Love it... well... I guess that is what all RX-8s are literally anyway... might as well chop it

coolcars44 08-01-2015 11:20 AM

yeah the car is 2400 lbs with full tank of fuel.the car is much faster on the track with 600 lbs of weight gone and most of it top weight

that picture of the car is at daytona before we went with full coil overs once we installed that the car was so much better

pcs 08-04-2015 11:28 PM

are you running chump cars still? Just saw a video of Daytona and i saw your car in it... you still running chump? how did you get the 8 to qualify...??

coolcars44 08-13-2015 07:02 PM

yes still getting the rx8s better and better.

we did a 2:20 with the 38 car and a 2:25 with the 133 car both finished the event in 2nd and 5th in class with no major issues

Well... Improved on my Laguna Seca time a tad this year, with less HP and more weight too:

1:45.69 -- 2005 RX-8, 3125lb, 217whp (dynojet). Ohlins shocks, eibach springs, stock sway bars. 245/40-17 Hoosier R7 compound.

Nice! Any video?

blu3dragon 08-18-2015 11:47 AM

I was back at Thunderhill at the weekend and knocked another 0.5s off my previous best. Now:
  • Thunderhill (3 mile) - 2:11.48 -- RX-8 s2 sport, RB intake, midpipe, Fat Cat coilovers, well worn Direzza Z2 255/40/17.

It was HOT. 93F air temp when I set that time in the morning, and rose to 103 later in the day. I had a little more power, but less grip than last time (due to both heat and old tires).

Laguna Seca yesterday, and I was 2s off my previous time from 2 years ago. I had fun sliding around though with some particularly nice drifts out of T11. Not sure if it was all down to my well aged tires, or if the historics left something on the track. T2 was super slippery. Almost like a wet track. Looking at the data I lost 1s in that turn alone where I had 0.2G less grip compared to 2 years ago (on the exact same set of tires). I guess it is time to buy a new set :)

Unfortunately it turns out my video (which I rarely check because it is built in and auto records whenever I start the ignition) was broken so I don't have anything.

pcs 08-19-2015 10:25 AM

dang blu3 - you're pretty consistent about tracking and looking at data. I have some data from the Aim Solo, but I rarely actually look at it, lol! Guess it's time to start!

blu3dragon 09-07-2015 04:01 PM

Replaced my Z2s (200TW) with NT01s (100TW). First time driving R-comps. Cooler temps as well. Went 5s faster. Seriously happy, and just amazed at what this car can do :)

As a point of reference, the top Spec Boxster driver in the club race was running 2:05.xx second laps. Those cars are around 180rwhp, 2650lbs, running Toyo RR (40TW) 255/40/17 tires with full race suspension, cage, seats, etc.

Thunderhill

(3 mile) - 2:06.36 -- blu3dragon RX-8 S2 sport, estimated at 195rwhp and 3065lbs w/driver. Stock interior & body, fatcat coilovers, Nitto NT01 255/40/17 tires.

"full race suspension" - if it's an SpBox it's just some off the shelf Bilsiten PSS9 coilovers, nothing special. Maybe swaybars (would have to look at ruleset) and 911 GT3 control arms just to allow enough camber adjustment. Toyo RRs are comparable to NT01s despite whatever treadwear (ie marketing) ratings you want to look at. (It's ok to underrate a tire ie mark a 100tw tire to 40tw, but not vice versa).

You have similar stuff really, but are running right with them at a worse hp/weight though (14.7 to 15.7) which is good :)

Good info... really what I meant is that they are going to have stiffer suspension, and more aggressive camber. I have coilovers, but I daily drive my car so it is not as stiff as I would have it for a pure track set up, and it also appears to be camber limited at the front.

From what I could tell watching one that was in my run group (so not one participating in the club racing), I actually had a bit more towards the end of the main straight, so maybe better gearing or better area under the curve for me, or he was a little down on power for some reason. It did look like he had more grip than me though (corner and exit was faster), which I would expect given less weight, stiffer suspension and same tire width even if the RR is not much of an improvement over the NT01.

I have to believe that the top racers are faster drivers than I am so I guess really what I am saying is that it was great to learn the RX-8 is capable of running so close, and also that I am likely at least as quick, although perhaps not as safe, as the mid pack club racers :)

this is what we did at vir last month in the 24hr event one of our cars had a low pressure failing fuel pump which caused it to be about 5 seconds slower than the 38 car this was on the full course.this was the end of the event result there were 12 cars in our class and 84 cars in all

kbrewmr2 09-21-2015 10:47 AM

you guys are #38 and #133 I assume?

coolcars44 09-22-2015 05:13 PM

yes car 38 and car 133
