Having fun in a "closed" and "safe" environment is cool. We seem to have gone away from the origional question. But... I messed around with drifting a little in my miata, learned some car control, and had a real good time. IMO it is good to be a "little" loose on the track, this is what I am used to from the miata. I believe that there is a saying that says "loose is fast". Not sure of the exact verbage. My RX8 seems to have "tighter" tendancies that my miata. Which probobly makes it pretty nuetral. I haven't drifted in the 8 yet though. IMO there is a HUGE difference between being a little loose and drifting.

Loose is fast, Drifting costs $200 a tire...

While everyone keeps talking about how to initiate a drift, no one is focused on car control which is vastly more important. The best way to learn car control is in the wet since its so much easier to break traction and induce tragic understeer or oversteer. Not to mention you won't tear up your tires. Without car control, your drift will quickly end in going straight or in a spin.

It was raining during the first Evo school that I did, and my instructor could drive the entire course in a continuous slide. Now THAT is skill. I didn't have that level of skill; I could get through about 3 turns in a continuous slide (right-left-right) before the fourth would put me in a spin. :(

for those with an open mind and who actually realize there are more forms of motorsports than what's presented in Fast and Furious, tuj is right on.

terrypk1, some words from someone who's done this waaaaaay before there was a Formula D. you don't need a turbo for drifting. the 8's stock e-brake set-up is worthless for drifting and is best used for parking. suspension set-up is huge. as tuj stated, getting the rear-end to break loose is easy - maintaining the drift, now that takes skill - a combination of throttle control, steering, and braking. this takes practice. lots of practice. the wet, empty parking lot suggestion is the best place to do this.

drifting does take some $$$. good suspension set-ups are not cheap. and you'll definitely go thru plenty of tires.

just driving the 8 in stoplight to stoplight traffic is cool. my guess is that the majority of folks bashing drifting also do not have 1320 (1/4 mile), autocross, or other legitmate racing experience. not all, but probably most.

my suggestion is to try your car on all forms of driving and see which one provides the most boxer-staining adrenaline pump for you.

as for as drifting goes, yes... its very fun. unfortunately there are very few scenarios hwere it can be done safely without endangering yourself or others so please be careful. just start off stock to see what your car needs and go from there. be prepared to spend $$$$$.

i saw drift bible for the first time last night. i was a little bit disappointed because many of his so called "styles" of drift dont apply to the 8 or most modern rwd cars for that matter. i had very high expectations though. i used to have a road racing corolla for 3 years. i dont know how he manages to drift it so easily.

I know most people think drifting is BS but to me it's lots of fun. I bought the rx-8 with drifting and track racing in mind. I hope to attend some drift days next spring(2006). As far as best motoring goes, Keichi Tsuchia is just a master of drift. I have been watching best motoring and I don't think there is an 4wd/FR machine he can't drift. I too was kind of dissapointed with the drift bible becasue he makes it look sooooo easy. He turns into the corner and magically he's sideways. He says "see that's how I do it" and that's it. His practice menu is good though. I can't express how easy it is to start drifting in the rain. Goto sports Authority buy a large soccer cone. Go to a wet empty parking lot and drift doughnuts around the cone. When you can do this you are ready for a drift day. :)
