During my last run at willow springs, I had the hardest time trying to keep my body from sliding from one end of the car to the other. I think some of you who tracked your 8's would know what I'm talking about.

As a daily driver, I don't want a roll cage.
So what would be the next best thing?
I want something that will keep me in my seat and stop me from sliding all over the place.
(I maybe answering my own question when I say "racing seats", but I kind of was hoping there would be an alternative )

Here's an easy way to keep you in place for free.

1.) Move your seat back about eight inches.
2.) Put on your seat belt and pull it all the way out until you hear a click or when the belt lock engages.
3.) Let your belt roll back up so it won't have any slack.
4.) Move your seat back forward.

This way you won't slide all over the place, this is what I do when I track, it really works.

CG lock will do it as well, but they are pricey.
On another thread, I saw a few people use these as well, and apparently they work the same as the CG lock and are only 3 or 4$ http://www.babyearth.com/graco-car-s...king-clip.html

I personally have not tried one. I will try locking the belt the way SE3P said and see how that works

+1 for the CG lock. I use one for my spirited weekend driving and trips through the mountains.

I use two things to glue me in my seat (leather) when tracking.

One, a CG Lock, it's not THAT expensive and, although other ways my work, they are missing one convenience feature. The CG Lock allows you to set it and forget it, by that I mean, once in place on your belt, you can lock the position and then there is no further adjustment needed during the day. Take the belt off, put it back on, click it in and it's at the right tension, i.e., tight.

Two, well good as the seatbelt is, and locked tight w/a CG Lock, you're still gonna slide around on the leather (at least I do -I'm 155lbs). So I got some weird material at a fabric store, that's essentially a clingy-feeling foam/fabric. I cut a pieces to fit the seat bottom and the seat back. Put in place it clings failrly well to the leather seat all by itself, and then you sit down and it clings to whatever fabric you're wearing, and you don't move anymore - it's really helpful!

The combination is as close to a racing harness without having one as I've found. At the end of a day on track, the stuff has to be literally peeled off and rolled up in plastic as it will stick to itself.

I thought it didn't work with double pass belts. How did you get it to function properly?

If you search, some people have described it... basically it looks like you put it on backwards and it will still work

the torso harness looked interesting, but sounds like you need to disconnect the side airbags to use it safely

Here's the stuff I use and it really, really, really(!) sticks you into the car. Once you're in the seat this stuff is literally stuck to you and the seat at the same time. You simply don't move, not forward, not sideways, you are stuck and it's great! I tried that silly waffle weave shelf material and it doesn't hold anything like this, in fact it lets you move around quite freely, becauae there's no 'stick' involved.

The closeup of the materialc shows it has a fabric core with a somewhat shiny plastic like surface. I wish I could remember what it was and where I got it, sorry, but perhaps the pics will help you going to a fabric store, I believe it was some internal upholstery type material. It's the same sticky stuff on both side of the core. Keep in mind when I say 'sticky' it is not like tape, there's no goo or residue, but a very strangle feeling material that the warmer it gets the more it adheres to things.

When I'm finished for the day I have to literally peel the stuff of the seat slowly and the rip shown is where I was too quick and it sticks to the leather and rips a piece off. Then I roll it up on a cardboard tube (like for a poster) between two pieces of plastic to keep it from sticking to itself (which it will esp when hot, and won't come apart from itself without ripping some more).

If you can find this I highly recommend it as it only a few bucks and works "nearly" as good as a racing seat when used with an appropriate fixed belt tensioning system like a CG-Lock.

I use a 3" lap belt in conjunction with the stock 3-point belt. I find it to be much more comfortable than a CG-Lock on a stock belt.

I bought 2 of these at local baby's r us, on sale $1.99
I will test them tomorrow( autox ) and report back.
I usually don't move around too much, but my girl does.

cg lock, and just putting it out there, cause i used to do this, don't hover over the clutch, use the dead pedal to keep you in.

Update. These work really well to keep the lap belt tight. Good for autox & cheap.

While you're at babiesRus, pick up one of those baby-seat rubber seat-protectors... looks like it'd work similar to what spin9k has, as it has some tack... the one I have for my son is rubber-ized on both sides, and is a 1-piece seat-back seat-bottom.... I wonder if that'd work pretty well.

For what it's worth I have cloth seats, don't see leather being much different.
Do leather seats allow you to lower your butt like cloth seats?

Just used the CG Lock yesterday for the first time. Works pretty well. Keept my knees from getting bruised all to hell.

I can't see how those add-ons offer anything over using the OE inertia lock on the OE belt as stated in post #2, same for the twisted belt

You might be suprised. The constant tension of the lap belt is comforting. For $2 the graco product is worth it. It could also be used at the shoulder pivot, although I haven't tried it yet. Will test both lap and shoulder this weekend.

I used a seat belt clip for 3 autocross seasons in my 2005 RX8T. One clip on the lap belt held your butt in and another clip on the shoulder belt held your upper body in. $1.99 at Baby's R US. Here's one I found on the web. Click here

In the first generation Miata, a lot of people have cut out the seat bottom foam or take out the foam on the seat back. Again, for the Miata NA, the seat back had a piece of foam that you can take out, but still leave you some foam. The seat then becomes deeply contoured like a racing seat. Side bolsters are really high. Can this be done on the RX-8 seats?
