GEEZ! Autocross Mapping SW
 

Thinking of ways to improve my skill, ran across this site. Has anyone used/heard of this before??

The maps look VERY cool, shows your course based on lateral g's, where you brake (red) where you accelerate (green), you can compare runs.. I mean GEEZ! what else do you want to know about your run! :D

Could be great for REV-IT-UP or any autocrossing. Runs on a Palm or Windows. GEEZ! :D :D

I bought it, used it, didn't like it.

Complaints:
1. Antiquated software. Written in Delphi 1.0 (we're talking '91 software) and distributed on several floppy disks. I talked with Brian and offered to create a new install CD for him for free. He never followed up on that.
2. Program is not compatible with Palm OS 5.0. You need a PalmPilot III or something equally old.
3. You record data with a Palm but view it on Windows. The Palm is simply a data recorder.
4. Raw maps from different runs on the same course do not visually look the same. It takes a lot of fiddling to make them look similar--let alone make them look anything like the actual course. This is due to only using g-sensors. Having the same visual map is important.
5. Software updates are few and far between. Last version in 2001?

I ended up selling the thing and buying a DL-90. They cost twice as much but include a GPS sensor that makes multiple-run maps that actually look like the same course and includes a host of sophisticated data recording and analysis features. yea I thought the site looked a bit threadbare for smthg that should be selling like hotcakes to autocrossers, but had never seen anything like it before.

Too bad the DL90 is $720. That's getting up there but does have GPS and nicer sw for sure. Do you use yours often, and has it allowed you to improve greatly your and the car's performance?

Wonder if there is SW out there that would get similar (but non-GPS) info out of a Gtech Pro thru the serial port?

No accelerometer-only based system will give you consistent course maps from one run to the next. I find that vital to comparing multiple runs and understanding what's different between them.

My wife and I use the DL90 almost every autocross. Like anything, you get out of it what you put into it.

Another product to look at is the MaxQData MQ175 (might need the MQ175 Multi for the RX-8). You can pick up sensor output through the OBD-II port (or wire it directly). It also uses acceleromters and has a GPS input (which will sample at 5k if the GPS device will support that rate, otherwise it will be 1k like the DL90).

The last time I spoke with them (late winter) course plotting like the Geez does (but better sounding) that wasn't reliant on GPS was in development but no ETA on when that feature would be ready.

It's pricey though...and you need a PocketPC to log data.

While an accelerometer-based solution won't give you a "pure" map, I've found that it is much more telling when you can see the actual forces that acted on the car.

Hence, I ended up writing AXAnalyst, which use data from accelerometer-based devices (GTechPro RR and Edelbrock QuikData, right now) to generate a path map (which gives you a 30-second "where did I screw up" view) as well as strip chart and G-G circle.

Good runs appear as "stretched out" maps, since your speed "overcomes" the cornering forces, and bad runs appear as knots, where the cornering forces "overwhelms" your speed (and yes, the "ideal" would be a nearly straight line).
