Enkei Kojin vs RPF1
The RPF1 seems to be the popular go to wheel for autox. It was hard to argue with that boasting a weight of 15-15.9 lbs in 17x9 according to tire rack. I personally could never get past the ugly look of them though.
It seems they have a new contender this year though with the Kojin. 17x9 weighs in at a staggering 12.1-13.1 lbs! And they look good too. (personally) I know they're new but I wonder if anybody has any and has run them yet and has any review about them. Edit: Forgot to mention price. They're cheaper too. Tire rack has the RPF1 at $ 257 but the Kojin is just $ 149 |
Why is one sold under the Enkei "racing" series of wheel and the other one in their "tuning" series?
|
Who's @ss did you pull that weight number out of? Not only would that be the lightest wheel ever made in the history of automobiles, Enkei wheels already have a reputation for bending like warm butter.
Typically the Tuner series weighs several pounds more than the Race series and even their new race wheel weights have been increasing over the RPF1 edit: saw on another forum the same weight was listed on a Grassroots Motorsports mag ad, I'm not surprised . |

Attachment 227359 Attachment 227360 I too saw it in "Sports Car" magazine. Perhaps the SCCA and Tire rack have joined forces to troll me in hopes that you would come riding in on your high horse and stomp my down with a typical snotty remark. If so, they sure did get me. |
The issue is you don't know any better to question the validity of it. Just because you read something doesn't make it a fact. It certainly doesn't qualify as "weighing in at a staggering .... lbs". I knew you were embellishing the situation. They will likely weigh around 19 lbs in a 17 x 9 size. FWIW the website gas no weight data listed.
. |
Regardless of the validity or not, I didn't embellish anything. I was simply rattling off what I saw in the ad.
Maybe they are lying to create some hype about their new product. Maybe it was simply a type-o (across all the weights in that model? They are all light) Maybe its true. Maybe they have hollowed out all the spokes and back side of the hub face to achieve said light weight, coupled with a paper thin barrel. Making them incredibly weak and doomed for failure. Who really knows? But I still think its worth the discussion. I'm not gonna buy a set just to weigh them in and or have them tested for strength. Just as I'm not gonna scour the internet looking for the truth. |
That's crazy light for that size. My Buddy Club QF's are 13.9lbs at 17x9 and that is the lightest i've ever seen in that size.
|
you weren't embellishing and I wasn't being snotty, glad we straightened that out
be sure to post a pic of them on a scale weighing in at a staggering 20 lbs just to prove I was off slightly ... but be advised that TR has them listed on their website for $210 each. You can get a 16 lbs wheel for about $30 more. |
I called Tire Rack about that exact ad to call bullshit, also to compare the magazine price to the web price. Long story short, these weights are based on engineering estimates as Tire Rack has yet to receive a set to actually weight. Once they are received, which should be in the coming weeks, they will update the actual weights on the web.

that's false advertising...
|
and slander against any competent engineer
|
Yea, that is in no way possible.

racing has rules, so you usually can't do any "basic tuning mods" |
the tuner series are heavier than racing series, I'd expect this wheel to be about 4 lbs heavier than the same size/offset RPF1
|
Their print ads that include the Kojin have been updated and now say TBD for the weights.

IMO they bend as easy as any non-forged wheel
Take a new set, measure the runout, spend a day hitting the curbs, then recheck them and let us know what the differences are |
I can't deny that the curbs won't bend them up. But I've bent a lot of other wheels, even forged wheels, banging curbs.
|
Not sure if they only weighed 1/2 of a wheel or meant kg rather than lbs
Enkei Kojin Matte Black 17x9 |

Enkei Kojin Matte Black 17x9 The new forged O.Z. wheels right next to them do look to be impressively and genuinely light and have a price to match |
Someone should have known something was fishy when you compare the size to weight ratios of the 18s. Adding .5 sometimes adds 4 lbs and other times takes 2 lbs off lol.
