Does anyone drift?

Hey does anyone out there drift there RX-8s? I mean I think they were enginered with gripping in mind but the car is 50/50. Also you can only grip so much. Well let me tell you, if you don't drift you're missing out! It's easy just go try it out at an empty parking lot or something. There are several techniques but you can start out with power slides, everyone does. Hmmm... whats the average age here anyway? Me, Im 19. Also considering that the RX-7 FD was one of the best drift cars ever made, it's only logical you should drift the 8!

P.S. Forgive me if I sound reckless, blame my age.

I'll try and get pics soon too. I may have to wait for a legal event though.

Pkskull77 Mar 14, 2005 01:39 PM

I am suprised no flames are up yet.

NVMYGT Mar 14, 2005 01:44 PM

only 3 minutes and you're surprised...man this must be a really active board!

cgrx Mar 14, 2005 01:45 PM

There shouldn't be flames.....Drifting events do exist and look pretty cool

guy321 Mar 14, 2005 01:45 PM

Yeah, the forum is really active actually.

No flames here, but a friendly word of advice. I would be careful what you post as Mazda NA or your dealership could read this and decide to not warranty something later on because of abuse...

You SHOULD/NEED to wait for a LEGAL event

cgrx Mar 14, 2005 01:46 PM

you may get flamed for the sig though............

ThatREGuy Mar 14, 2005 01:55 PM

Wait can they really find you on a blog? Screw it no pictures! Well maybe later. And drifting is safer than you think, never any flames. Body damage can be EXTENSIVE though, I've seen it. The only fear is messing up your car and paying for new tires, the stock potenzas wear down hella fast! In four months I've rotated twice! But trust me, drifting will increase in popularity just wait. It requires a different kind of skill, and you can take corners much faster. The 8 has awesome grip but it only goes so far.

Morgan Mar 14, 2005 01:57 PM

My name on all my other forums is "driftette" i love it..it's a blast....but i hate when people who dont know what they're doing try and then hit other people...but i do love then they try and break their car...makes me chuckle

Chrisbert Mar 14, 2005 02:02 PM

Only accidentally...followed immediately by the need to drift in my pants.

See I knew people drift the 8! Its fifty fifty for gods sake! Hey do you find counter steering at 45+ a little unresponsive, not much, but when compared to how well the car handles in general? But then it may be hard to compare considering driving styles and abilities. I've only been drifting for like two years. Since I was 17. I started driving when I was 17.

dmp Mar 14, 2005 02:09 PM

I hope you don't crash and die....that'd be a shame.

Rhawb Mar 14, 2005 02:13 PM

Drifting isn't actually faster, it just feels faster because of the forces involved...Aside from loose surfaces, a good grip driver will just about always beat a good drift driver. That being said, sideways is definitely the fun way to get around a track! :D

Im_DANomite Mar 14, 2005 02:15 PM

i don't think Mazda would be searching for anyone so that they can void their warranty. just all rumors.

drifting is awesome...my shitty dunlops make it even better.

XDEEDUBBX Mar 14, 2005 02:16 PM

did you just pick up the drift bible dvd or something? hahaha hyper little kids...

ThatREGuy Mar 14, 2005 02:22 PM

Yes sideways is the funnest way! But when you push the car hard enough, sometimes you cant grip at all, even with the DSC. The 8 isnt AWD. It can be faster, look for inertia drifts. Which by the way the 8 is awesome at. But I only have the guts to do it in the big parking lot behind where I work. But trust me dude, it gets to point where drifting is faster unless you're driving an STi or an Evo. And I've seen those drift too, well just the Evo never seen an STi drift, not in person anyway. And better I dont say where Im from.

Only in the snow- I like my tires :)

Actually, at my last autocross event that was set up for Miatas (short, slow and lots of turns, slaloms and chicanes), I ended up drifting the entire last run of the day in first gear... I have to say I was amazed I could run the entire course that way without hitting a cone and ended up with my 2nd best time (and got a standing ovation when I finished :D)... the '8 is very well balanced for this sort of thing.

For those doing this on the street and endangering people however, you're stupid and will end up wrecking eventually.

StewC625 Mar 14, 2005 02:45 PM

Only when on a raft on the water.

RX8PDX Mar 14, 2005 04:35 PM

I drifted my Suby 2.5RS.

It doesnt drift like a RWD though. The AWD keeps it pretty much sideways and doesnt let rear end come out at all.

you can take corners faster drifting than i can racing normaly? are you sure b/c although drifting is hella fun and requires a different type of skill.. i don't think it will make you go around a track faster. in fact i'm sure it was proven (forgot where sorry) that if you take a great drifter, his time will be slower around a track than if he isn't drifting  . oh well hehe who cares it's still really fun.

and yes mazda goons do cruise around here looking at people who do stuff to their car so they can use it against them for warrenty issues...those jerks:p

anyways have fun and be safe...and never do it unless it's a legal event.:D

ouch that sucks bad..sorry to hear the mazda goons got you. (knock on wood i'm still safe :o )

Rhawb Mar 14, 2005 05:20 PM

Well, it makes sense that not drifting around a track is faster when done right, because you're using part of your engine power to keep the car loose. When you drive with a "grip" style, your car is using 100% of the available traction and thus is able to put down more power/speed while cornering. Also, why do you think you never see actual GT racers drifting their cars around the courses? It's not because drifting is "new", trust me. People have known about it for a lot longer than you'd imagine.

fullsmoke Mar 14, 2005 06:25 PM

Yea, drifting is just gettin popular in the states. Isn't the AE86 the most famous car to drift in?

FS

Rhawb Mar 14, 2005 06:34 PM

It's only really the "most famous" because of Initial D. Don't get me wrong, it's a great drift car. It's cheap, well balanced and easily upgraded for drifting, but I really doubt it would be as popular as it is (especially in the states) without Initial D. It seems like most pros prefer Silvias from what I've seen.
