autocross: rx8 vs. b stock...

can someone tell me why the rx8 is the car to have in b-stock. i did some reasearch and say a car like, the bmw z3 m coupe, which is smaller than the rx8 and have more power be wrose. I am acually curious and not trying to bash the rx8 because its the best car out there. thanks.

crazy guess here ... because it wins :dunno:

ZoomZoomH 02-21-2006 11:16 PM

oh, i don't know, maybe having 8 of the top 10 finishers in B Stock at the 2005 Nationals (including the B Stock national champion, who also happens to post on this forum) driving RX-8's have something to do with it

it's all about results when you get to the national level, and RX-8 has shown it :D:

like techinichially why does it win? i know it wins, but im just curious as to WHY...

wild guess #2 ... because it's faster :dunno:

have you driven one?

how about low center of gravity, great handling, excellent steering with quick ratio, powerful rotary engine, huge brakes and a lighter weight compared to some other cars. It probably also doesn't hurt that you can fit really wide tires on the stock size rims.

it could also be because the RX-8s have faster drivers if you are from the "drag racing is for fast cars, autocross is for fast drivers" school of thought.

chassis.

all of the above...

What wins in Autocross is that one has to have the "talent" to drive fast.

My thoughts include...

Renesis engine also has a wide linear powerband. (driveable from 2000 - 9500 rpm) Note: it prefers >5500rpms to drive in the powerband.

Renesis has light internals - flywheel, fast rev-up and lifting off gives incredible compression braking from the engine... all contributes to dynamic engine response.

^^^ You see, most race engines gets pistons balanced as well as making everything lighter to make the engine rev up or drop revs quicker. The Renesis powerplant was made to work with lighter internals compared to the older rotary engine designs.

With three moving parts in a rotary engine... it is simpler to get the characteristics above. Ohhh... centre of gravity also contributes to superb handling - mounted so low in midship position.

With all qualities listed above and from previous posts... a talented driver will learn to drive a well balanced chassis, with incredible engine response to get good results in competitions.

TALENT is a big factor!

It's light. It has a lot of wheel width for its weight. It has friendly sizes of V710 and A3S0X in production. It can get close to enough static negative camber and has a good camber curve. Center of gravity is low. The steering is quick. The handling is predictable.

The BMW Z3 series by comparison is camber limited, has a higher center of gravity, weighs more, has slower steering has narrower front wheels and a chassis that is not nearly as good at putting down power.

Simple most people that appreciates the 8 are true enthusiast, being true enthusiast meant that these people had better corner carving skills. The 8 somehow complements all these attributes of a skillful true enthusiast.

That does not cover most of us... We race it because it is cheap and Mazda pays. If I had money to flush and I liked working on cars all the time I would buy a 968.
