without knowing all the facts assumptions are the mother of all fails ...

definitely, i have no idea why anyone would consider aluminum for such a critical stress point.

So I have to ask... this is pointing at the lug nuts, but what happened to the lugs? It looks more like the lugs sheered, not the lug nuts.

I would think that a lug nut sheering would still leave the studs on the hub. From the look at 9:17, the lugs are missing.

they call them nuts but i have a feeling they were lug/studs like BMW and mercedes use. in which case they just spun out and some sheared where you can't see.

even if they were nuts, once several become loose enough the wheel wobbles enough to just snap them all off.

I don't think they just spun out. If one failed and the stress was too much for the rest of them, the others were just sheared off from the stress. Or perhaps one failed and then another and then the rest sheared off. No way to know for sure.

if you've ever worked with aluminum threads you know that even the best alloys of aluminum are still quite weak. not worth saving 1lb over the span of 20 lug nuts.

I and others have used them for years without issue, they are quite strong actually

I can show you plenty of similar videos of wheels coming off with steel lug nuts, but don't let me get in the way of the guessing and misinformation game ... for that type of vehicle cost I would have expected them to be using titanium instead

we had this happen, and it sheared the ARP wheel studs right off...

im no expert, but maybe there was over tightening which messed up the threads?

arent you supposed to be very careful when tightening aluminum lug nuts to not over tighten them..

or it was too loose... i suggest that the fact that it sheared the studs off is suggestive that it was loose, but we can't say for sure without seeing a stud/bolt.

there aren't 5 lug nuts for fun, at high G forces you actually need 5, and if there are only 4, the wheel falls off

aluminum has a smaller window to work with. too much torque and the nut strips, too little and you get the same result.

The rotor hat is also aluminium, on some of the threads it's also stripped.

It could be any number of things was my whole point. Its a lot easier to say the part was messed up rather than admit 'we f'd up' on camera. Maybe it was a manufacturing defect on not being treated to the proper spec or who knows what; nut, stud, carrier hub, etc. Too tight, too loose, or maybe that had nothing to do with it. You can pull any guess you want out of your exhaust pipe, because thats all any of us can do is guess. The video shows the driver hit the curbs very hard several times just before it let go.

The threads on the ones I use are strong enough to damage a high strength ARP steel stud when I f'd up and cross threaded one. It just sounds to me like some people are mouthing off about it without any real experience.

we just ask Mario... this one is reverse of the GTR, wheel bearing failed, and the rotor kept the wheel on for a while, until it broke.
