1st time on compounds, what to expect?

I'm finally getting a set of used compounds mounted. Hopefully they'll be ready for this weekend, if not, by the next event...

This is my first time on compounds, any advice on what to expect? I assume higher grip, but I recall people saying they get to their limit and then give way with little or no warning.

Anything a compound-newbie should keep in mind? Thanks.

Also, what kind of pressures should I try running? They're Kumho V710's, 245's, front camber is -1.5, rear is -1

Thanks

Ripken is pretty low on grip, try 35/35 and go from there.

Nothing really special you have to do to drive on R-comps other than waiting longer to brake, braking less, and staying on the gas more. :eyetwitch

You should also keep notes.
Track, weather, air temp, tire pressures, overall feel of the car with certain settings.
Then next time you will not have to guess.

expo, man, you need a new avatar. That dude is frightening looking.

Red Devil 05-18-2006 01:04 PM

Why are your camber settings:
-1.5 Front
-1.0 Rear

Usually that's reversed. I assume it's for your driving style?

pcimino 05-18-2006 01:25 PM

I might have the settings reversed in my head. Had the alignment 8 months ago. Need to pull the sheet and see where it is before my next alignment.

TeamRX8 05-18-2006 01:56 PM

camber ratio sounds perfectly fine to me :D: but I'd recommend going higher on the front tire pressure, at least 38 psig with only -1.5 deg camber

otherwise expect this:

just take it easy and feel it out rather than trying to be a hero on your first run :wavey:

You also might want to wait to turn in later too. Steering response is going to be much faster than you're used to.

I remember the first time I used R compound slicks on a track. I couldn't stop grinning. I knew the track pretty well before hand, there was one corner which I normally had to lift for. After a few laps on the slicks I said "alright, we're not lifting, If I go off, I go off". I didn't go off, and it was an incredible feeling to have the go pedal planted all the way around. I was on the radio giggling about how much grip there was. Be ready to giggle like a school girl, and don't worry, the ladies find it endearing.

John V 05-22-2006 07:54 AM

Paul you should have mounted them up!

It was nice to meet you.

pcimino 05-22-2006 09:11 AM

Glad to meet you too. The shop couldn't get to them. In their defense, I didn't give them much time. But I'll have them for Boeing and Warminster.

John, YOU SMOKED A-Stock AND S-S. Great times. Here are the results for everyone else:

The fact you were 4th in Pax seems a bit odd. I think the software might be giving too much weight to GS and STS.

Obviously you've got skill and equipment. Would you take a guess at your time with a bone stock 8?

At least I didn't come in last. And Phil O. ran NC twice on Saturday. He beat me handily the last time we met up, but was a second behind me this time. Not sure what happened there.

It is what it is... but Tony Savini and Corey Ridgick are definitely top-tier drivers.

Honestly it would be impossible for me to guess. I think I just had a really good day.

CRX Millennium 05-22-2006 12:01 PM

Seeing the result just confirmed my prediction that Devens will be a split between kc and John V. Time to pump your co-driver for secrets of success, clyde. Hope you guys taped the runs to share on your website. Wish I was there. Still looking for that one replacement tire here in CA.

So Tim was on Dunlop SP SSR and Paul on Goodyear F1 GSD3?

LOL... KC is one of the top BS drivers in the country, I am definitely not to that level yet but I just had a good day and drove without my head up my a$$. If I can learn to string together two days like that I could nab a trophy, hasn't happened yet though. :spank:

We took video but clyde does the posting and he's been too busy to get it cut up and put on the site.

Imp 05-22-2006 01:27 PM

Damn fine results. You have two weeks of remembering what you did there so you can bring that game to Devens. :) I expect nothing less.

Are you on Hoosiers or Kumhos?

--kC
(You needed a 42.344 to beat Tony in Pax :D OUCH! Those MINIs just love PAX.)

I will not be pumping john for anything. :suspect:

It's a complete reversal from this time last year but worse (for me). It's all been downhill for me since May of last year. John has just been on fire lately and I hope it continues through Devens and beyond.

I just need to find my mojo again. I know that it's not in my ass because my heads been up there looking for it for quite some time. What are you gonna do? :dunno:

MEE TOOOO! man i had a smile from ear to ear.

couple weeks ago I went and practiced with my street tires again, just so i coul dhave a fun day with friends and not burn up my race tires... man it was hard to get used to driving with street tires again. then I put the race tires back on so i could practice with those before the race the next day.

I was giggling like a school girl! it was nice to have the car do what I wanted it to do again.

you will not regret running race tires.they are FUN! :ylsuper:
