October 2017 Update

Well found some down time lately and figured i’d give a little update. Back about a month ago, my vw timing belt sheared about 3 teeth off causing some damage. I plan on pulling that head off in the spring and rebuilding next spring. Another lesson learned there. Stick with OEM! So in the mean time, insted of dailying my 8, about 120 miles a day... i got a a 2018 camry. Honestly i bought it thinking long term. I plan on keeping the car for as long as i can see. It will be the reliable daily, and if i have kids in the next 5-10 years.. dont have to worry about a relaible car or a car payment as it should be paid off by then! Being 4 real doors dont have to worry about breaking your back getting a kid seat in and out, although getting my gf’s sons child seat in the 8 was not as bad as the GTI, it was still more work than it should be. It did fit perfectly fine though which is good! Overall, I gotta say, i love the 8-speed in the car as im getting 40+mpg’s so i can save more money for the 8

Back to the 8, i did peel off the plasti dip except front and rear bumpers and the rear doors. This car has seen hell. I dont know what the previous owners have done but its bad. I do plan in getting it fixed up but as the budget it tight and working 7 days a week its going to be tough. I dont driver her as much as i want to or have time to work on her. I will post pictures soon!

Current RX8 & Camry

So here are the pictures of my poor baby. Yes i am driving around like this. Yes its F****** so ugly and dumb but student loans going into repayment and a car payment, i can still afford the toy, but funds are not available as much as i'd like them to be. Not going to sell it or anything as this is my baby and my graduation gift to myself! I put away about $150ish a month to put money into this and it's going to work out as we are entering the cold season. So by mid spring 2018, i will have enough to overhaul the entire braking system. One thing i noticed was, who ever painted the calipers, painted over the dust seals essentially ruining them, and the pins in the rear i suspect to be seized. I will keep a look out on eBay for OEM calipers for a sport suspension, if rebuilt that would be great but i plan on a straight OEM caliper, pad, and Centric blank rotors with all new hardware and SS lines. I plan about $650. What's really bothering me is the paint as i have ZERO experience with body work/paint and honestly can't afford the quality work it deserves

Pictures: See attachments

What's the deal with photo bucket being a pain lately?

You can rebuild the calipers relatively cheaply actually. It's not difficult.

As far as the paint goes, you only really have three options as i see it.

#1- take it to a paint shop and have them either completely redo it or do paint correction (expensive option)
#2- Live with it as is and re plastidip (cheapest)
#3 Sand the entire car down, use self etching primer (spray can) and find a paint you like that can be used in a spray can. Contrary to everything you may here from some individuals it IS possible to get a very nice paint job from a spray can. Just takes time and patience. ( This would be the middle option that isn't that expensive it just takes time)

Just my two cents.

A few months ago Photobucket made it so that you can't link uploaded images to other websites.... Unless you get a $400 per year subscription to their service.

Also the two-pack, chemical hardening paints can be custom mixed and put in a rattle can. Around here it's about $30 per can of any color you can imagine, plus about $30 for a two pack clearcoat.

Ive never rebuilt a caliper, i imagine it can’t be too difficult and im sure there are guides on it too, but if i can snag a good deal on some to keep the car with no downtime i might do that, and rebuild the exisiting ones as a back up. I have plenty of time to decide on that.

In regards to the paint... ultimately i’d like the existing paint all stripped and redone, but thats not realistic for me in the next 5-7 years at all. What i have been looking into is autoflex coating and even getting it wrapped, but i wonder how it will fair with the given paint condition. I don care what happens to the paint but i dont want to wrap it or spray it and then it be an issue with the wrap or spray. I’d obviously clay it and all that before hand but i think that’d be my best option for cost vs longevity.

I use imgur. I have trouble with some older attachments on most forums, and imgur is probably going to last as long as reddit does (hopefully) and stay free.

Just copy the pics and upload them to the site. You can right click on a pic, copy, then paste into the forum uploader.

As for all my pics, I use flickr, I pay $25 a year for unlimited.

I went with just uploading them as attachments

Had to swap over my GTI wheels to winter wheels while it sits out there... so i took the 8 for a spin. Wow, i miss this toy. i hate working 7am-7pm, 7 days a week... on that note though, brakes definitely need to be refreshed! I have an appointment on the 7th to bring the car in for the two airbag recalls, control arm and fuel tank issue. I also noticed a HAIRLINE crack on the passenger dash, i can just see that getting ruined. Oh well!

Just a few days ago Kevin Landers at Rotary Resurrection listed a bunch of used OEM parts he had for sale, which included some lightly used brake parts (a set of calipers and some pads/rotors for I think both front/rear) I can't recall exactly. He may still have them and the price was VERY reasonable. Check with him if you're okay getting something lightly used, since you're on a budget.

He is usually who i would reach out to because i know he knows what he is selling and prices are very fair. But i also looked at brake motive, they rebuild OEM calipers for a decent price. I think i might save up until the spring and buy it all then because in reality i won't be doing work on the car in the upcoming months seeing as work life is extensive lol. Thanks for the heads up

Did you pay for the rental, or did they cover it?

Got my car back, and boy did i miss this thing. Driving around in the CX5 and the camry were so bland and not engaging, not to mention... TOO QUIET! I will post my RO when i get home! Looks like the recalls are now up to date!

Recall Repairs

Attached is a copy of the work order. Looks like they replaced both airbags, both lower control arms and sway bar end links.... But they did not do an alignment, kind of want to call them back to have them align it because now it pulls to the left quite a bit than i want to deal with...

Brake Job

I know i have been falling behind with the Mazda lately, just got done rebuilding the GTI from the teeth on the timing belt shearing off.

Looking to install the following come Spring 2019:
- Front and Rear Brake Calipers (REMAN)
- Front and Rear Brake Rotors (Centric Blank Discs)
- Front and Rear Brake Pads (Mazda OEM)
- Front and Rear Brake Pad Hardware (Mazda OEM)
- Front and Rear Stainless Steel Brake Lines (Stop Tech)
- Front and rear Speed Bleeders (Russell)

I was going to just change the pads, but i learned the caliper pins were seizing and the caliper piston boots were torn, i figured i'd go ahead and install all new calipers and all.

May 2019 Update

As the warmer weather is coming up, I know i keep saying i plan on working on the 8 every years, but its expensive!! Well this year so far:

-Body panels are Plasti-Dip free (now just the edge where the panels meet, its a pain)

- Installed an APR GTC200 wing with risers. (Mainly wanted for looks, say what ya want, i dig it)

-Planning on vinyl wrapping, likely going with Miami Blue from porsche (Likely a 2020 thing. Will be more than i want to spend in 2019, budgeting $2000 give or take)

To-Do:
-Install all brake hardware, waiting for a nice warm weekend, hopefully it stops raining soon!

-Just drive around and enjoy the rotary!!

Plasti-Dip peeled off finally

APR GTC200 with 2.5” Risers Installed

APR GTC200 Wing Hardware is Quality in my books

2019 Update

Well, with 2019 wrapping up, lots have changed in a short amount of time!!! Some for the good and some for the bad. Let's start with the bad... I no longer own any of my cars, The GTI, Camry and yes the RX8. All gone
End of August, the Camry was totaled, due to my fault... long story short, car kept us extremely safe, no the airbags didn't deploy either. After that, I ended up having to daily my GTI before that too started to develop a host of issues from sitting such and the heater blower no longer worked, ran rough (later found out, I shorted my ECU because my o2 wire got caught on something and it shorted that out) among other issues, so I ended up parting ways . Lastly, the RX8... was a great project and learned a lot from this, but the body needed much work and since space was limited, I ended up selling this for someone else to enjoy for time being..... The good! I ended up selling this toy because earlier in the summer.... I ended up buying a new toy!! I bought a C6 Corvette, 2008 base model and boy is this thing amazing. Wanted to give V8's a try and see what the vettes are all about so I decided to pull the trigger! To replace the Camry, I ended up buying a 2013 Avalon Limited (realizing now I don't have any photos of it ). Long story short, see the photos :D
Lastly, I will be starting a new career shortly in which I hope I grow professionally much more than I have previously!!

Sitting in the garage the day I bought her!

Detailed the car

Sunset!

It's a beautiful C6! Is it a 6spd? Make your way over to www.corvetteforum.com if you haven't already. I'll see you there if you register as I also have a Corvette! Shame you no longer have the 8. Perhaps there will be another on in your future!

It's just a mildy built 86 with a TPI 350 and 4+3. It's a very quick car for what it is and a blast to drive. I've had several C4's and really enjoy them.
