This has to be one of the best pics from the RotaryNews site:

Is that a permanent tattoo? If so, a big thumbs up from me!

OK to answer a few questions here.

I looked at the AEM intake. It looks alot like the first prototype long arm system from Rotary Extreme. It uses a generic cone filter mounted in the front opening of the car in the air stream. This is the same type of system that Chuck at RE verified idled like crap. After talking to Racing Beat, the length of the pipe that the maf is mounted on is what makes a difference. If it is too long, which isn't hard to do, the car idles like crap and makes less power. Based on what I learned from them and my own knowledge of intakes, no thanks, I'll pass. That system was just a bunch of 3" pipe that was joined together with hose couplers. I don't know what takes so long to develop something like that.

The Racing Beat intake is pretty sweet. While shaped like a cone filter, I wouldn't classify it as one. It is much larger and open. It will definitely flow more than the average cone filter. They mount this filter closer to the maf and farther from the front of the engine bay. This is because some of the systems on the market that use cone filters, have the filter too far forward. While the difference in length may only be an inch or so, it makes all the difference in the world when it comes to your idle quality. Their box is very smooth on the inside with nice rounded edges to aid in airflow. The intake into the box is as of yet undetermined. They reported that it may retain a VFAD system or it may just be a long tube that sticks down into the airstream for ramair. With their setup, idle quality and performance with the maf are not a problem. They tested the intake on the dyno after we left. They are a few weeks away from releasing a finished product. They even had 2 different filter elements that they needed to test. It should not be a loud intake by any means.

The blue Mazdaspeed car inside did have forced induction. When asked if it was a turbo or a supercharger they would not tell us. It is obvious there is a big intercooler and a boost gauge but we were left to guess the rest. Fortunately I know that if you look in the wheel well of the front right wheel behind the tire, there is a little plastic dirt flap that you can pull aside. When you do it gives you full viewing access to the exhaust manifold and motor mount. That car had the factory stock exhaust header and system. It had to have been supercharged. Also judging by the fact that when auto manufacturers install intercoolers, they typically use small air/water units built into the manifold for positive displacement superchargers whereas everyone else uses air/air types for centrifugal superchargers. It is most certainly a centrifugal supercharger. My guess it is a Procharger but this is only speculation based on the fact that Sunflower Mazda is working on a supercharger kit. Who knows which one it really is but it is probably a centrifugal never the less.

Actually, Blitz uses air/air fmic on their supercharger in all their applications and that intercooler looked like a blitz in terms of dimensions and core type when I looked at it along with the fact it is running Blitz gauges. Considering the Blitz is the most well developed and packaged of all the options I would not be suprised if that is what it is. Also remember Blitz-NA is in LA and not too far away from Mazda.

RotaryGod,

What do you think of PettitRacings supercharger??? did you get a chance to talk to them and ride in it???

Dang you where at racingbeat when I was there. It would have been great to have meet you. I am sure that I speak for everyone, cause I base my upgrades/purchases on your opinions.

we were the bunch standing around the bench where they had the renesis housing laid out. it was the "porting" bench. we also spent some time in the dyno room digging prototype headers out of the closet hell i ended up with grease on my pants and shirt from leaning so much on the work bench. i cant believe we missed you.

It felt great, and it sounded like a little jet turbine. Felt torque on the low and high end. The racer guy said it will increase the Horse power by 50. Final production in December.

Do you know who is tuning the car? Is it Pettit or some other company?

I did not ride in Pettit's car. I didn't even hear it run. I did look it over though. I know it is a prototype but here are my criticisms with the kit so far. Luckily they will probably be fixed by production time.

The removed the stock plastic upper intake. They had to. They replaced it with a tubular aluminum intake. That thing was terrible. The air had to make some really sharp turns to get where it was going. They will probably fix this by production time though.

The supercharger looked a little small to me. If it is only going to produce 50 extra horsepower than that explains why it is sized the way it is. If they wanted alot more power, they'd need a bigger unit.

I did hear from others that the car idled rough. After talking to Jim Langer at Racing Beat is is very obvious why. If you look at the pictures of the Pettit car's engine bay, you can see that the maf is mounted pretty far back on the intake tube. As many have found out, if this tube is too long before the maf, the car idles rough. It even affects power because of this. The easy fix would be to move the maf further towards the front of the intake tube to get the length correct. They wouldn't necessarily need to shorten the intake although it does place the filter in the front of the car which is a place I wouldn't want the maf.

If I were them, I'd find a different way to mount the intercooler. It's basic location is fine but maybe in a more vertical position to create more space up front for an airbox and battery. It would be a tight fit though. I'm sure they'll resolve everything by the time production is ready.

It was cool meeting you too ceramicseal. I don't know how anyone missed us at Racing Beat. I was hovering all around the Renesis housings examining and even explaining how the ports worked and how certain things could and couldn't happen. zoom44 commented on how many people were standing around listening at that point. It felt kind of weird especially since Racing Beat's main porting guy was standing next to me not saying a word. Don't know if that was a good thing or not! After listening to Jim Mederer, Ianetti, and the engine builder from Jim Downing Racing (forgot his name) talk to each other, I felt like an idiot! I'd almost be willing to buy a ticket just to sit there and listen to them talk.

Rick Engman is the man's name (RE) of ' How to modify your RX7' fame, the book by Dave Emannuel with Jim Downing. By far most of the info in there came from Mr Engman. It was neat to see the important Japanese gents pay him reverence, like Koby and Mr Suzuki. I was just thinking today it would be neat to have a Rotary Engine Technical Conference where people like Jim Mederer and Rick Engman could share their extreme experience. These two alone have about a combined 65 years of top level rotary building experience.
I did see Cameron Worth's supercharged RX8 and also witnessed Abel take it for a test drive and return with a wide grin. Seemed quick. Hope it works out well for Cam who also has crazy experience (over 30 years).

When Abel ran his car I thought the Al Quaida was attacking again. Very loud and violent sounding.
