Scratch one RX-8
2 Attachment(s)
This is what happens when a full size Chevy van hits a stopped RX-8 at 35-40mph. I was stopped at a light, guy didn't see the light or me, and obviously he was a couple of feet into my lane. Must have been screwing with his phone.
Happened in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday at about 8:30pm. :mad:http://www.carlsondigital.biz/images/rx8-001.jpghttp://www.carlsondigital.biz/images/rx8-003.jpg |
crap...you ok?
|
Just once I'd like to open a thread like this and see a VRed. ;)
Wow, hope you're OK. It looks like the crumple zones worked well. I hope they total it. If they do, are you getting another 8, or what would you get? |
Damn, looks like the curse of the silver strikes again. :(
|
Damn, I hope you're okay. I don't think that's gonna "buff out"...
Let us know what the outcome is, okay? - Tyler8 |
Damn silver curse!
|
silver has problems. wow
|
hope you're ok

Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday at about 8:30pm...The rotary gods were not pleased.
Wow D.C., that's brutal! I really hope you get yourself checked out, that was no small fender bender. From the looks of it, the RX8 did hold up alright considering the sheer speed and size of the thing that hit you. (damn SUV drivers :p ) Let us know what the insurance company says... |
glad you're ok, looks like with a little elbow grease that will buff right out :D
|
He probably hit the right rear tire with some serious force meaning the rear differential is toast and the frame is probably warped as well. It's prob totalled.
|
totalled for sure.

Ok
Yep, I'm OK. Neck was a bit sore for a couple of days. I'd actually noticed the guy approaching maybe a second before he hit, and thought jeez, he's not stopping. Apparently I'd nailed the gas trying to get out of the way just as he hit. Once I recovered my wits after the impact, I heard a serious revving noise, and realized it was me, throttle to the floor, accelerating across the intersection. Nailed the brakes then. My left arm, from holding the steering wheel, was sore for a bit also. I'd gone maybe 80 yards from point of impact.
Right rear wheel has a major crack, circumferentially, about 6 inches long near the valve stem, so yes, it was clobbered good. Roof is deformed, and right side doors are jammed together. I had a laptop, in case, plus camera equipment in the trunk (Nikon D1 and D2x, 80-200mm, 24-120 VR, 15mm, SB-800 flash) in a Tamrac wheeled case (691) that all survived. One cheap hair curling iron, in the right rear corner of the trunk, was killed. Any recommendations, Meguiars or Mothers, which polishing compound I could use? I'm leaning towards an 8 cubic yard dumpster. Yes, I'll get another 8. I like the rotary too much. If silver is cursed, perhaps the new white, and paint the wheels a dark gray/anthracite. It IS true that people don't see the silver. |
and oh . . .

Curling iron belonged to this lady, also the reason for the cameras. No, she was not in the car.

Glad to hear you're OK, Dick! Also good to see the Team Voodoo decal survived. Damn treacherous SUV drivers! Regards, Gordon |
Sorry you had to go through that ordeal. Glad you're okay. I must say I'm impressed with how well the 8 took a licking. A vehicle twice your size clobbers you off center and the passenger compartment looks nearly perfect. Thank the Lord no one hit you after you were shot into the intersection.
|
Wow, all in all, it looks like the 8 held up pretty good. Glad you are ok.
As to the polishing compound......I think you're gonna have to clay it first! |
Just be glad you're alive. I bet that darwin SUV only held up an inch scratch on the bumper. I can't imagine what these idiots in SUVs are doing while driving on the street. How could a driver not see a car on a stop light or even the stop lights itself! Cellphone? Makeup? High?
Sue that mofo's ass to the max, don't hold back. |
the opponent
The Chevy van suffered a flat left-front tire (the corner it struck me with) and grill, bumper and fender damage that interfered with the driver's door opening. It had to be towed. I think the hit thoroughly rung the bell of the driver, because when I got out of my car and looked back, the van was during a slow left turn and slowly went down the street away from me for a couple hundred feet. I thought the S.O.B. was going to run, but then it turned left again and came back up the hill to park next to me.
Insurance man just announced it WILL be totaled. Now waiting to hear an evaluation. |
Silvers and Greys should probably drive with their lights on... They are very close to road colour..
There seem to be a lot of people out there with really poor eyesight, shocking concerntration or just plain drugged out from cough mixture overdose! Sorry to hear about your car.. I suggest Yellow - very hard NOT to see.. :D She's a beautiful lady... :) |
^ Total is good, you get to drive a new RX-8 and not a repaired one.
|
wow, These cars really can take an impact! Sadly they tend to lose against trees though..hmm..
I'm glad you're alright though!!! |
man, another reason im happy to drive a vred.... what kind of exhaust *was* that?
glad to hear you are ok and that they totalled it, everytime i see a crushed 8 im more impressed with how well the passenger compartment holds up. |

Glad to see how well the car (and you!) stood up to the abuse. Now, carefully saw off the rear end and make it into a pickup :D Good luck with your new 8. |
