Ported 4 port

Here are pics of Phil's 8' newly ported intake ports. Thats a mouthful.
So last night as some of you all know CRH and I went to a local Rotor Heads shop and I ported Phils intake and exhust ports . Ray and I are rebuilding Phils engine and thought we should give him some special treatment. Due to the fact that Phil is a wonderful guy.
Well here are pics of the finished product,,,

pdxhak 11-08-2008 03:40 PM

how much did you guys grind away?

Easy_E1 11-08-2008 03:48 PM

Enough that we recycled the metal shavings and bought a case of beer.

nice job guys i'm curious to see it in the dyno! please post more info

secret8gent 11-09-2008 04:01 PM

any comments on how (much) timing/flow was affected VS stock 4 port (and 6 port)?

[off hand i can't remember the stock values...]

always good to see things like this

what kind of cutting\grinding tools did you use? i would like to do that kind of clean jobs on my engines as well!
Lucky Phil!

Did you use a template? Who's template?

Looking forward to results of your guys work!

Well there is only one local shop on your side of town I would trust doing port work. So it had better have been Glen.

before and after shots?

The upper edge is a factory design. They pushed the port outward as much as possible. This is where the corner seal rides. They (Mazda) figured that design out.

As far as flow goes the amount is unknown. I don't have a flow bench to compare the two before and after.
As far as timing goes, all that was done to change any value was adding a bit more duration to the port on the upper edge. There's not very much room for any other enlargement of the port.
90% of the changes were made to the interior of the port. Removing casting edges and smoothing out the flow through the port.

How many people have done this? I know of only two and one was on a 6 port. This is the first 4 port I know of having been done.

No it was not Glen, Dave. He's not the only one in Phoenix that ports Rotary Engines.
I was porting Rotaries in the late 70's. I think that was before Glen was born. :Eyecrazy:
Ask me about it some time Dave.

so a bit more duration on the intake? did you just alter timing on the secondaries? or the primaries too?

did you think you got close to the 80° closing of the auxiliary in the 6 port?

I imagine he'll pick up a bit on the top end if I remember correctly how this works... (should increase the rev limiter~ ?)

here's some reference info:

Easy_E1 11-10-2008 08:51 PM

There is no way to make the 80° port closing of the 4 port secondary compared to the 6 port. What I have done is add 3° +to the primary and about the same to the secondary closing point.
As I said the port walls are not capable of much enlargement. The most you could possibly obtain is 5° at the most. I would be worried about carving out the port to obtain that much.
To get to the 80° point you would have to make a new rear and front cast iron plate.
It just is not possible.
Right now we are at the 48° 63° marks on secondary and primary respectively.

I see no way to increase the exhaust port timing. Just change the exhaust port internal size and dimensions.

nvrfalter 11-10-2008 08:54 PM

i can haz ports?

Send me your cast irons and I'll port them for you.

No, I have dibs on them.

Phil's 8 11-10-2008 09:25 PM

Erick has been kind enough to port my 4 port. Don't know how to thank him other than to show my grattitude by posting my thanks.

Every little mod adds to the final outcome of the hp and torque. My desire has always been to have a 300hp 4 port. Erick has contributed to the final result.

I can't wait to drive this BHR - Easy_E1 monster.:Eyecrazy: :Eyecrazy:

Easy_E1 11-10-2008 09:46 PM

Phil, I don't want any thing from you but MONEY! JK
I have always wanted to see what can be done to the 4 port and now I know.
I was a little hesitant to go to any extremes but now I know what can be done. You will have a lot better flow and more intake duration. That should be a nice HP increase on your engine.

secret8gent 11-10-2008 11:40 PM

thanks for the reply, actually that's what I expected you to say.
[judging from the pics, anyway]

too cool. (and good job!)

Well you said "shop". I didn't know you did port work.
Any plans in the future to add a flow bench?
