Thumbs down Pics From RP Performance Shop (Bad News)

Not everyone knows this, but I had the Racing Beat Clutch, Flywheel and Pressure Plate installed last week Friday. After driving maybe 50 Miles things became a little scary. When Engaging the clutch, there was a burning smell. (1st Thing I Noticed Wrong) Then there was a Vibration in between 3-4 RPMS( I felt it and heard it). Called RP Performance when I got home and they told me to come back in so they will could take everything off and look at it.

Outcome was very bad. There were hot spots! It couldn't have been due to incorrect installation because they just reinstalled my stock parts and everything is fine. I also never drove hard at all, never went pass 6000 RPMS. This is the 1st time I've heard of anything going wrong with Racing Beat Products(I've only heard good things about them). Another RX8Club member is due to go in next week for the same exact problem and with the same Part. I hope army_rx8 has the stock parts to put back on because their going to send your Racing Beat Parts back when you go in next week.

My parts were sent back and I'll be waiting to hear from Bret from RP Performance. I don't know if Racing Beat is going to fix this or am I going to have to get another brand.

Has anyone else had their clutch, flywheel or pressure plate installed?

Pictures Are Below(Sorry for the Quality, it was my Camera Phone):

Hmm, not good news, I was thoroughly impressed with RB, you'll have to post what RB responds with.

I Will do when I found out. The shop was very surprised themselves because they deal with Racing Beat Parts all the time and hardly ever have problems with them.

well glad to hear Bret is taking care of you, and is showing you exactly what is going on (bonus points+++ for customer satisfaction), i assume he will reinstall the parts for free once replacement parts come back from racing beat?

I Believe so. He's a nice guy. He showed me a lot this morning. Man, the stock clutch is so soft compared to the Racing Beat.

ah crap cas2themoe.....sorry to hear that..haha looks like i'm going ot be having the some thing done to my baby. she also has the clutch burning smell...unfortunatly...and teh vibration...but i also have the issue when engaging it..hope nothign is perminatly messed up now i'm all worried. ah well guess i will find out next tuesday (i'm out of town right now..but no worries the car is at home resting before her operation).

if RB products messed up my flywheel i hope they replace it (it's the mazdaspeed one) it wasn't relly cheap oh well i'll seee next week what the damage is.

oh and yes i did keep the stock parts...b/c you never know when you migh tneed them

hope everythign works out for you....and me...so good luck to us..i'm sure racing beat will take care of us they have a good reputation for that...glad to see that RP is doing a good job of customer support/satisfaction.

odd though i've never heard of RB products causing a problem either thats why i went with them...hmmmmmmmm interesting. i called them last week and they said they had no issue with that clutch set up...i asked if they had installed it in their test 8 and they said "yes" maybe we just got the clutch's and pressure plates that were made on friday or monday:p

I have no idea when I'm going back in to the shop. I have to wait until Bret talks to Racing Beat and settles things with them first. Hopefully they figure out what the problem is.........

Could it be that the original installer screwed something up ? You say they put in your stock stuff, and it wirks fine, but was it the same guy that did the install ? In every shop they have like really experienced guys, and some new guys. I have had stuff installed before by experts, but they just weren't feeling it that day and did something wrong. Not blaming RP or RB. Good luck, I hope it all works itself out.

Thats a good point. I didnt stay and watch the first time. But when they replaced my stock parts, the owner did it and I stay to watch(As you can see because of the pics). It could have been a screw up. Well, either way I hope something happens soon and hope things happen right the next time. I want to know how their going to deal with it

usually if one tech works on a car, he would get it back everytime. just to keep consistancy. in this particular case, you are considered a "come back". therefore, it should go back to the tech who performed the work. i don't understand how he could've fucked up the install that bad. installing a clutch is practically dummy proof. the clutch disc can only sit in one direction, otherwise the assembly would not sit flush. if the pressure plate was faulty you would feel it through the clutch pedal. not to mention it would be grinding gears etc. if it were the throw out bearing, it would cause noises and similar problems if the pressure plate were bad. either you have the wrong parts, or RB has totally jacked something up. this bothers the **** outta me, i would like to see everything in person.

i hate it when things never go right the first time. doesn't it make you feel like you wish you never even touched it?

I felt the same way but the faster increase in RPM's from stock to Racing Beat was a Blast! I'll wait and see what happens. I sure hope it wasnt Racing Beat's products, they are known for such great things. And even the Shop said that to me!

I had the EXACT and i mean EXACT same problem as you.

Felt like i didn't torque the flywheel to the counter weight right, but everything is 75% better now, I believe it was just a matter of getting the clutch to set properly.

I used the RB flywheel with MS clutch and PP

One of my problems was I didn't place the clutch slave back on exactly the same spot as it was, compounded with a new "redesigned" throwout bearing the engagement point of my clutch changed.

Until i got used to driving it in the new spot, i got a whole lot a odur of clutch, and a lot of bogging/chatter.

After putting 250miles on the combo I’ve gotten used to it, just a matter of letting it set properly and getting used to driving a tougher clutch, and lighter flywheel.

(You’re going to have to give a little more gas in 1st gear, btw I did the install myself)

O and here is a dyno graph of my flywheel.

I'm still waiting for them to contact me to tell me whats up. I want my clutch setup installed NOW!!! LOL, But if it goes in, I want it done right. We'll have to wait and see what happens. Maybe I'll pay a little more money and go with ACT.

I drove a full ACT clutch setup while i was at KD Rotary, it felt "girly" in comparison to my cars clutch, very loose and easy to drive.
