Painted Oem rims gunmetal

deciding whether to paint my rims black or gunmetal, i had a hard time finding any gunmetal rims on a black 8 so i decided to post mine.

did this about two weeks ago. love the look.
Well the pictures are huge. too lazy to downscale them.

marshallchang 04-21-2009 02:32 AM

hmm idk, i just liked the look of them not painted.

RxMadness 04-21-2009 02:51 AM

the 3rd pic looks great.

did you paint them yourself or have a shop do it?

pdxhak 04-21-2009 06:46 AM

Gunmetal looks good and provides a nice contrast to the BB paint. Paint the center caps and maybe get some tuner lugs to finish the job.

Jace 04-21-2009 07:10 AM

That looks sick man. I love it. What did you use to paint it?

peterlemonjello 04-21-2009 07:12 AM

Those look good. Get the rx8 rotor center caps and it'll look even better.

mscamp02 04-21-2009 07:45 AM

good job man....hope you took all precautions to prevent them from chipping

Have you gotten any questions along the line of:

"are those wheels stock?"

or

"is that a factory wheel color?"

I get those all the time with my rattle canned black wheels. Leave the center caps unpainted... sets it off fer shur... that's just my $.02 though.

Gunmetal does look good with black. In the 4th photo the paint looks a bit splotchy. Did you add a clearcoat?

myriadshalaks 04-21-2009 10:42 AM

those actually look nice. good job.

dozer 04-21-2009 10:43 AM

nuke0907 04-21-2009 06:36 PM

looks good. i almost did this to mine too.

Transam kid 01 04-21-2009 07:22 PM

Looks great; def. a good job painting them. My only suggestion would be to paint the center caps as well

marshallchang 04-21-2009 11:24 PM

.

read all the replies, and thanks for the compliments.

couple things, i personally prefer the look of the centercaps unpainted, when i see the centers painted as well somehow it just looks like too overdone in my eyes, and the different color center caps add a different look.
~the rotary centers seem like a good idea as well.
I used duplicolor primer, paint, and clearcoat.
i cant really remember how many coats of paint was used, but i think it goes, 2 coats of primer, either 2 or 3 coats of gunmetal paint, and then finished off with 3 coats of clearcoat.
~my friend who has had a lot of experience painting rims, and even an entire car, did it in about 4 hours.

candiberry 04-21-2009 11:57 PM

i wanted to paint my rims too :(

Brian Major 04-22-2009 09:07 AM

did you clear coat them? they look kinda flat in the pics?

ndhoffma 04-22-2009 09:58 AM

Looks nice... I plan on doing the same to mine when it comes time to swap tires out later this year
