K&N CAI dress up

I finally got time today to do a project that I posted as a Photo Shop preview in an earlier thread about what I was planning on doing under the hood. This is the next to last project that I previewed. Here is the result of some time off from work:

One last one

doesn't that prevent air from getting to the filter? It seems that it would cancel out any gains from adding the intake by restricting airflow with that clear cover?

D MENAC 7 05-11-2004 11:10 PM

Yes, that is a one piece two bends lid. The brown rubber on the sides is a weather stripping that I used to cushion the lid from the sides that are also clear acrylic.

This forces the Intake to take up more air from the original air tube in the front of the stock airbox mount. This tube goes out across the front behind the grilled and then down to the left front lower side of the front grille.

I feel it will get less air from the engine bay and more fresh cooler air from where is it supposed to receive air from. After test driving the sound decreased by very little. That is the only thing I have noticed so far.

Besides getting air from the original air passage, there are a lot of other passages to get air from as this is not air tight by any means.

There will be a DIY on this soon. :D

Dennis, i see small dollar signs in your near future......

you should make a package with all your mods and sell it. when you get some more.

also, are you going to incorperate this into your avatar?

I fabricated it myself. The materials can be obtained from just about anyplace that sells glass. The process isn't easy unless you have worked with acrylics. I learned this in 7th & 8th grade shop class (mandatory). You have to know how to heat it up and bend it, most of the cuts were on a table saw, a band saw or scroll saw would work too. There was considerable measurment and fitting involved, what I have there isn't perfect but it looks good. The materials cost about $50 total but the butane torch I bought cost $25, the rest of the tools I already owned.

I attached the sides to the existing K&N heat shield sides. I used 3M trim tape to adhere it. I will be posting this information in the DIY, I just want to get the measurements down and some details before posting it first. The top stays put due to the rubber door gasket material and the prop bar for the hood keeps it from moving forward.

Hadn't planned on it, if I start selling too much, I may have to purchase a vendor's permit on here. :D If that were the case, I could probably afford it then because this wouldn't be exactly too cheap because it is labor intensive.

Right now, I have no plans except to post a DIY on it. And after I do if I find someone selling them on ebay...grrrrr LOL I'll just cut the price so low they will stop like what happened to the other guy who did that on there.

Formula 420 05-13-2004 08:11 AM

do you have a strip heater for bending plastic?

D MENAC 7 05-13-2004 10:16 AM

No, I actually bent it by heating it up with a small butane torch as it set on the metal edge of my saw table. A strip heater, huh? Well, if I ever get somthing going, I would have to look into that. Thanks.

Formula 420 05-13-2004 04:34 PM

it's mad easy, you put your plastic across it and line the heat strip up with what you want to bend. it will kinda go up at the edge, and when it goes down agqain, take it off and bend and hold it until it cools. works gresat.

More importantly didthat CAI give you any gains

D MENAC 7 05-13-2004 07:04 PM

Just about any CAI will produce very little gain in HP on the RX-8. They did such an excellent job on the stock one, there isn't much to be gained, other than looks and sound. That is about all it makes a difference in. I've never seen a dyno with the intake of any brand in comparison with the stock.

I know I'm a little late, but....

D, that is one SICK piece of work!!! Mad props, very clever and original.

blksf8 09-19-2004 06:09 AM

Dennis, PM me if you can make anymore. I am interested in one, but probably aluminum if you can make it. I need to muffle some of the sound as the intake hit 100db at the track. thanks
