GoPro HERO 2 and External Mics - Lets talk
 

So... I have the GoPro HERO 2 Motorsport Edition with the suction cup mount and all is well save for the absolute shit audio that is further ruined by inevitable wind noise.

I picked up a that (unpowered) that isn't much better even with a cheap foam wind guard.

, however i'm still concerned with minimizing wind noise and I believe that its all going to come down to placement. What about plus ?

Tips on making videos with a camera attached to the outside of a car and getting quality audio? I'm all ears.

I always find my answer RIGHT after I make a thread about something...

I have a GoPro and I think it has great sound for being inside a plastic case. I will agree with the wind noise issue but the guy in the video had it inside his car.
Is there even a way to hook up an external microphone on a GoPro camera?

The guy in the vid has a Audio-Technica PRO24CM mounted to his frame between his mufflers. Also, yes, the GoPro HERO 2 (not the original HERO) has a standard 3.5mm mic input. How else would I be using the cheap Sony one I bought. :rollingla

Okay, sorry, sometimes I have a tendancy to just scan over sentences instead of reading them and I didnt bother clicking on the links...I thought that it would just bring up pop-ups.
Also,I have a GoPro v1 not the v2. I was wondering what GoPro did differently for the v2. Have you seen the 3D setup they offer?

I have, but I have zero interest. I can put a second GoPro to much better use then just gimmicky 3D crap. Having a second camera angle for one...

Either way, I ordered an Audio-Technica PRO24CM and a 25ft (better safe than sorry) of 3.5mm stereo extension cable so we'll see how it goes.

post up the video when you are done, so we all can see what a difference it makes

Got the mic!

I took a pretty long video today to show off the Audio Technica Pro24CM.

The mic is mounted creatively with two zip ties two my rear bumper facing the ground. (Hard to describe without a picture which I conveniently forgot to take.)I picked up a 3.5mm extension cable and ran that from the mic cable which I ran into the trunk, through the passthrough and up to the camera through the sunroof.

I know now that I need to work on the rattling license plate frame and it seems when the car is warmed up, an exhaust heatshield starts rattling as well.

Anyway, I think it sounds pretty good, especially at WOT. No distortion and NO wind noise!

Hmm, so I'm looking for something LIKE this, but I really don't want to spend ~$50 on it.

This will be used to mount the mic (which comes with a standard hot shoe mount).

Any idea where I can get something cheaper?

I'm going to look into this as well for my HD Hero 1 since the stock mic is poop above 40mph.

Unfortunately the original Hero doesn't have a mic input :(

I think the Pro24CM is a great option btw.

I need to plan out the mic spot and to shield it from the wind. I want to get as much audio from my motor as possible. That and it has to take the abuse of being used at the track for long periods of time...and the mic has to be waterproof...:fingersx:

Did you watch my vid above? I think right on the center of the trunk pointed down sounds great. I was toying with the idea of two mics and a small mixer. One for the engine ;)

Sure did and I was thinking about mixing in two mic's: One in the bay and one in the cabin.

I wont be able to get this off the ground in time for NJMP, but i will be playing around with mounting locations for sure.

Okay, so I looked at your link and it brought up another page with different connectors. I assume that these would "adapt" an external mic into the port in the back of a series 1 GoPro?

That's freaking awesome. My biggest complaint for the Hero was the lack of an external mic input. The stock mic was practically useless other than recording rattling and tin can sounds.

That's not too bad of a setup. I've been running an actual Samson Microphone(lolz) in mine, having the cam mounted up on top in front of the sunroof, and the mic wiring routed down inside, and up under the dashboard, but I'm tired of having to route it wherever I want the mic. Plus I just want something smaller anyway.

Been using a Camsports HD Max, which also has the 3.5mm Mic Input, but I don't quite have any videos where everything was dialed in properly to show you guys. Only always had problems, like the microphone managing to find something to tap against and such, haha. But I'd love to be able to put it on the hood, and the mic at the back of the car, and not have what looks like a random wire just running along my car.

I have a question for you:
I also have Motorsport edition go pro HD. I got the same mic. however my first test comparing internal mic vs the Audio-Technica PRO24CM was pretty disappointed. With the microphone on, the sound is so low. probably 10x lower than internal mic. I swapped battery, got same results.

do you have this problem or does it sound like I have a defected product?

I would say the mic is fine. I've noticed this too, which forces me to only use this mic for recording things like my exhaust... i.e. Loud things.

Research has said that its just the way GoPro's handle microphone inputs. It has an "automatic gain control" which is just shit, to be honest. We should be able to adjust gain on our own.
