Fuel
In the owner's manual and even when you open the Fuel Lid it says High Octane Gas only.
Just was wondering how many of you are actually putting the highest octane fuel in your rx8s. |
It says "High Octane Reccommended"
I've put everything from 87-93 in my car. The car idles much more smoothly on 87 than it does on any of the higher grades. I personally run tanks like this: 87 87 93 93 (repeat) |
i think it says premium not high oct. but like before i have used 87-93 and no real difference

I only use 93 or 94.

I use the highest I can, which is 91 here.

Thanks so much for all your replies. I've always put the high octane in my car. 93.
What I really wanted to ask was, will I hurt the engine if I use less than 93 octane? Sorry for the Stupid question. |

I alternate between 87 and 91. If gas is outrageously expensive, I go for 87. If it comes down, I go for 91 :D

I was looking through some old threads about this a couple days ago. (I found this from Rotarygod - "On all past non-turbo rotaries back to when time began, the best gas to use has always been 87 octane and this is what I have always used in my RX-7s. Turbo rotaries have always wanted the highest available octane. On an n/a detonation is a non issue. If you are detonating on an n/a, especially one this new, you have other more pressing problems. Typically a manual will say use "at least" a certain grade of fuel. Just assume that number is the best one unless you have money to burn. If the manual says 87 use 87. If it says 92 don't use 87. Simple enough."
Do a search on "octane and you'l find about 10 pages about equally divided between pro premium, mid and regular. I was running premium and tried mid grade and had no problems at all. |
93 octane only :D

I have been told from the Mazda dealer to use nothing less than 93, but again they also didn't know what the emulsified oil on my dipstick was back in December when I first purchased the car, hence why I do not use that dealership anymore (Wantagh Mazda of NY). I have also ran 100 octane/94 octane 50/50 mix, cost me 40 bucks to fill the tank 1/2 way but I had to experiment. To be honest I didn't really notice any difference, although I repeated this a few times and noticed that the car ran smoother through the rpm range with less of a hesitation in the engine, or it could have just been all in my head! Has anyone tried this and can maybe elaborate on the subject more? Maybe ROTARYGOD (seems like he's summoned more than the raingods from the American Indians) hence the GOD in his user id! :D

i fuel 91.. but.. i really want to fuel 87... >_<. but so scare it will hurt the car..

My 05' manual says running lower grades can decrease engine performance, and if you hear any engine knock, to up the octane rating. I've only filled the car twice, both on 87, gas is getting crazy and I don't drive her much so unless I can learn to listen for the knock (as it's different from a piston motor) I'm sticking with 87 for now. I ran 93 in my Subaru as it was Turbo and the map I reflashed with required it, got to expensive. Seeing I'm getting LESS mpg's then my LGT, 87 it is for now. HAHA.
