Curious plasti dippers.

I had the opportunity to make a sponsorship deal with a local shop here in Houston, TX. I'm posting pics up for those who may be interested in plasti dipping their cars in the future.

we started by wiping the surface down with alcohol to clean it off with any contaminates. the car was already washed before being pulled into the shop but this is just as a precautionary.

I couldn't decide on the color I wanted (it was between gold, copper, and bronze) so we mixed all 3 together. this is what we got https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...70070000_n.jpg

we spent close to 4 hours prepping the car up for dipping

first coat of black

we put about 6 coats of black

https://sphotos-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...22674445_n.jpg

after letting the black dip dry we started spraying on the tri colored dip.

the plasti dip removes off with ease, here us taking it off the tail lights and emblems.

heres some finishing pics.

I'm happy with the plasti dip and its holding up very well. cleaning is very easy and the car doesn't get as dirty as it would when it was black. my car doesn't heat up on the inside as much as it used to when it was black. stays relatively cool to the touch. hope ya'll enjoyed it. it does change shades of gold and bronze depending on the lighting.

How long have you had it on so far?

yesterday marked one week. I'll have it on till it starts peeling off itself and see how well it will hold up.

I wouldnt do it but as long as your happy.

Chrishoky 08-18-2013 04:22 PM

It last quite a while. I would expect 6 months+ before you see it start to peel on its own. I dipped my trunk for a while after doing some bodywork on it before it got painted, it lasted over a year before I took it off. I did notice some fading (it was black dip) but the dip itself remained very resilient to the elements.

Why not orange? lol

Anyway, the color looks unique...

honestly i wanted to go gold, but than I saw all the metallizers they had and i couldn't decide so they mixed 3 metallizers for me. gold, copper, and bronze. this was the result.

it was a sponsorship deal with a local shop that deals with plasti-dipping (if you couldnt tell from the banner in one of those last pics, shop is called southsideperformance). I had only to pay for the material. which was about $240 total. even than the material was at a highly discounted pricing. normally this type of job would run around $900. a lot of labor goes into dipping a car surprisingly.

whys your muffler so low to the ground ?!?!

Looks good though

unknown__Disciple 08-22-2013 08:12 AM

The catback was meant originally for series 1. . I had to get longer exhaust hangers to make it fit. So its probably hanging around 2in lower than where its supposed to be at.

GK1707 08-22-2013 10:15 AM

Why'd you spray black dip first? Why not just the gold right over your original paint?

9krpmrx8 08-22-2013 10:27 AM

You made a nice looking RX-8 look tacky. Congrats.

Provides a darker tint Im guessing. That's usually why people do it.

It looks good and it shouldn't peel for a while as long as you did it right and it isn't thin in spots. I hope you did thick coats cause if you didn't it will be a bitch to get off haha.

To make the dip thicker also it does help with the tint the vehicle will come out in

We had laid on really thick coats. Its super easy to peel off the dip when we were removing it from it from head/tail lights.

Can't Houston and SA just get along. Just share the star.

9krpmrx8 08-22-2013 11:43 AM

We all get along fine :) Unknown, please video tape it when you remove this crap.

He says right in the opening of the video he did it with spray cans. A real spray gun will lay much more dip and be easier to peel. My guess is he doesnt use enough.

G_ man 08-22-2013 07:35 PM

I'm surprised the plasti dip held up so well with the pessure washer used that close

unknown__Disciple 08-22-2013 08:09 PM

actually i had already done a video on the dip removal done on ssp's gtr. it came off clean unlike that jeep vid you posted.
dont mind the music. you can mute if you dont like it.

camcenters 08-23-2013 02:59 PM

IMO, I love it. I actually wanted to try gold but you beat me to it-_-. Came out great though. I only used a gallon and a half of black and I peeled mine about 8 months after. So yours should last a lot longer.
Looks Great!

Here's mine after I first did it at Fall IA

karstman7 08-23-2013 10:36 PM

"you peeled it 9 mos after" - becuase you were done or it was wearing? 900 seems steep for something to last 9 mos.....

Def didn't use enough dip. He must not know how to remove thin coats. Because I dipped my emblems and even though I masked off (sloppily I admit). I got some overspray on both my front and rear bumpers that was an absolute bitch to peel off. Sprayed some WD40 and rubbed with a microfiber and it came off like butter. I hear Goo gone works for removing it as well.
