Phat8 - I was kidding around... When you first posted that thread with the you doing donuts I thought it was pretty sweet and ballsy. A few of the other posters thought you were a reckless idiot though!

I don't think my sarcasm came off very well in this thread.

Oh and 4years - thanks for "paying" to the gramatical mistake! LOL

BTW this thread made me drive two gears lower than normal last night to see if I could get white tips.... needless to say it's a bit harder to do in NY with the traffic on the LIE at 7:00pm!

Aha. that's why i posted with a smiley face and thumbs up, cos i was pretty sure u meant what u said. to ask users w.t.f ??? i played along & said think 4 urself, cos everyone just goes with the flow when 1 nasty comment starts and r quick 2 assume, knowing u would'nt b so pethetic and say that... i understood, especially with the cheesy illegal parking comment... and ''paying'' (attention). i love sarcasm, i think my threads have a fair amount of it. i think we were both trying 2 get a point across. thank u. people need to chill with dissin and assumptions. not just me im used 2 it. but new users maybe get 2 post 1 post and never again. eg: a user with his 3rd post MY RX8 WITH NEW SPOILER. shame bet he did'nt see that coming maybe wished he never joined this forum... myself been told im gay...? things i've seen said 2 new people so nasty it's sad, the forum's gonna just have a bunch of ******** and never grow. just my opinion....

416to212. well done 4 trying 2 get ur ends 2 burn white. try when there's no traffic. i guarantee all the users with their looked after 8's they can burn white by driving it like a rotary likes best for a constant period of time at high rpm's. except maybe the automatic 8's.

That doesn't sound right... It's a measure of the Octane rating right? So 95 is 95, 91 is 91? Or is it measured on a different scale or something?

Just checking - because Mazda (here in SA anyway) reckons the car shouldn't be run on less than 95 - even the owners manual says so...

I know our petrol quality here in SA can be a bit dodgy though. I used to own a 1975 beetle and it was in the shop one day (surprise, surprise) and the owner (German guy) was talking to another guy about the petrol here in SA - he took a match, lit it and dropped it into a can of petrol... Nothing happened - the match just extinguished...

Anyway - not trying to argue with you - just curious about the difference in scales if any...

P.S. I use 5w30 oil - very hard to come by actually. No filling stations actually stock it - I found it at my local home depot of all places - and have been doing my oil top up's at home ever since...

Cool PhatMan.....

Be real careful with the Racing Fuel - the easy/cheap way to make it hi-octane is with Lead, which will destroy your cat and your expensive primary wideband O2 sensor.

It's OK if it says lead-free.....

Your SA rating system for Octane is only based on the "research" test result, ours is an average of research and road tests, and comes out roughly five numbers lower than yours - your 95 would be classed at around 90/91 here.

Nice tips!

I see - Good to know. So basically our octane rating is like car manufacturers claimed 0-100 (0-60mph) times. They may have hit that number once in perfect test conditions with a perfect launch after lots of practice runs and experimentation on launching techniques, but you'll never really get that number in the real world...

Cool Power.....

Test away, but you can probably save your money if it's a normal non-FI motor.

I have access to fuel as high as 120 octane and it makes no difference at all, I usually fill up with 89! (your 93/94) Can't say I feel any difference, and never get signs of preignition.

a rotary tuner also said i wont feel any difference, only if turbo'ed. a friend with a uno turbo only felt a slight change but noticable sound difference. will keep posted what our ''guessing octane'' 102.6 does... do'nt wanna damage any thing as u mentioned, so i'll try it once.

Yeah, as far as I understand, the main reason for using a higher octane fuel is it's higher resistance to preignition. So it would be benificial to a turbo'd engine because you'd be able to push the boost higher and timing further along with the higher octane fuel, obviously resulting in more power...

Just a thought though - our ECU is a learning ECU right, so it constantly adjusts fuel and timing as it goes along based on the 02 readings, right? So in theory, would you notice a difference if you used it over a long period of time, and perhaps cleared the ECU tims first before trying the fuel. That way it would "learn" the characteristics of the new fuel and perhaps give a little extra power???

Our 95 octane fuel was only introduced in the inland regions here in SA just recently - you would be able to get it at the coast, but not as far inland as where Phat8 and I are. But when I did the switch from 93 to 95, I didn't notice much at all. So I thought I'd give the ECU clear a try and see if it made a difference. So I cleared it and it actually did make a bit of a difference - more in the fuel consumption area than anything else, but the throttle does feel a little more responsive. May just be my butt dyno talking, but it makes me feel better anyway

I agree there is a difference, but it's nothing huge - I won't help you smoke someone at a robot for instance, but it is there

When I used the Castrol Edge 5W30, my exhaust tips use to come out white in colour after a good track session (no 2 stroke).

I've been using mineral oil these days and I do notice the tips have more soot on even after a track session compared to using synthetic oil (Castrol Edge).

I don't think the white residue in the exhaust is an indication the system is running lean. From experience, consuming 28 litres/100km on track (mineral/synthetic) is not lean at all. It's just the nature how Castrol Edge burns I suppose being a synthetic oil. Caltex Havoline mineral oil leaves more soot on the tailpipes compared to Castrol Edge.

I miss seeing the white tailpipes though!. Time to go back using Castrol Edge.

I guess switching it to manual mode in AT would do the trick..

he he... of course! only if ur flux capacitor's charged up. ''ok'' in all seriousness, i'll try another oil and keep every one posted. b4 using the Castrol Edge i did always used 2 go to the local mazda dealer and fill my can with the oil from their big pump and it used 2 still burn white, but not as quickly as far as i can remember. ''was a long time ago''
