built new intake from scratch, what you think?

1 Attachment(s)
built new intake from scratch using 3 inch pipe and a few hose barbs and couplers from a local hardwarre store. parts were painted with metallic annodized red paint with clear coat. although its a short ram, it will soon be converted to a true CAI once i get a smaller filter to fit the bumper. ill also be cleanin up the engine bay and painting a few more things to help clean the look up!

looks better than most, but still a short ram :[

....for now. i have the other piece made to fit to make it a long true cold air intake. unfortunatly the filter i have is too big to fit behind the bumper. so untile i get a smaller filter it will b a short ram :(

but ill also be adding a 350z ram air duct soon to add a bit more air flow!

then you have something good in the works and its unique, atleast it looks quality

@!!narotordo 11-04-2009 12:13 AM

Looking good. You should block it off so you dont get heat soak from the engine ;)

Exotic-Rx8 11-04-2009 12:23 AM

i actually thought of that, but im not that experienced with sheet metal. i have a roll laying around but not sure where to start. i may fiberglass something up if all else fails. i am good with fiberglass work so i may be able to come up with somethin useful untill i get another filter to put behind the bumper

looks alright

Rotr8 11-04-2009 06:27 AM

Might be better to position the MAF a little further back(behind the coupler) to give the air more time to even itself out,,, But once you go CAI the position should be fine

altspace 11-04-2009 06:36 AM

What is the pipe made of? I'd be worried about heat soak.

rx 8speciale 11-04-2009 06:41 AM

what are the materials you used and how much it cost , looks good

What he said, plus a couple of well positioned maf screens.
Isn't the stock maf pipe diameter 3.25"?

Show us a before and after dyno....time goes by...whats old (and didn't work back when) is new again. Just saying... maybe fun to build, pretty even - but not worth anything - no matter how little it cost.

pretty nice for a homemade fab. doesnt look half bad :icon_tup:

RX-8GT6spd 11-04-2009 10:33 AM

Thats cool I like that. How much did it cost

Exotic-Rx8 11-04-2009 12:32 PM

cost just under 40 for everything. If i had thought of it, i would have gotten a smaller filter to fit befind the bumper. the filter i had is too bulky and pushes the bumper out. i had enough pipe left over to run the filter behind the bumper so it can and will still be converted to a true cold air intake. the parts were:

15" long 3" exhaust pipe = 7 bux
4- 3" rubber couplers with clamps, 12$
reusable cone filter 20$
3- 3/8 inch hose barbs for the 3 vacuum lines by the throttlebody
Paint (which i had)

it didnt take that long to build aside from almost slicing my finger off. when i installed it i had alot of issues with idle and hessitation. when i press the pedal down the car bogged down and then jumped up to speed. but after i reset the pcm and kam and all that, she runs great. i even had a lean code reading on the cel which is now gone and still hasnt come back...

kersh4w 11-04-2009 12:36 PM

the filter is WAY too small.

http://www.knfilters.com/filter_facts.htm

we need something in the 8" range when dealing with cone filters.

Grungepup 11-04-2009 01:22 PM

yo Cav i want one of those.... can you make me one then ship is COD? kthxbai

lepichichi 11-04-2009 03:20 PM

not bad, but you pretty much get what you pay for :)

something to take a look at. Our MAF sensor is pretty specific about air volume you might be doing more harm then good. It looks good, if it doesn't mess with the A/F and adds HP then good work, otherwise just might have been for looks.

cornholio135 11-04-2009 03:31 PM

Just my 2 cents. I had a K&N short ram intake for a couple of years. After realizing about heat soak and rough idle I went back to stock intake and K&N drop in filter. My butt dyno says that it accelerates smoother now...

ferg 11-04-2009 04:04 PM

looks like shit

dshiznit1489 11-04-2009 04:44 PM

Looks good, but that doesn't mean it'll perform good.

legendkurado 11-04-2009 04:53 PM

should've went with vibrant 3.5" piping

alz0rz 11-05-2009 12:10 AM

While it was a noble attempt, I'm afraid that the stock intake will function much better then that.
Cone is too small, you are sucking and absorbing more hot air then before and that MAF position is not ideal.
You also downsized the MAF tubing which is not a good idea. Stock is 3.375" ID.

rodjonathan 11-05-2009 12:46 AM

thats actually pretty good for a home made looks quality ... also it will definitely be better when you go true cold air
