Body kits..
 

i was wondering when we would get a sign from stillen or some other companies about kits for the RX-8 i was wondering why..

My cars been out for over a year now and theres only about 7 kits out for it. I think your rushing things a little bit

How would a company design a body kit for a car where only a few people have seen the prototype?

Besides, the RSX is targeted towards the kind of crowd that would tend to add bodykits on it. I don't see too many initial RX8 owners adding kits, so I would expect body kit production to lag significantly behind that of the RSX.

Mazda maybe in for a big surprise just like Honda was with their S2000 roadster. Due to the price of the car Honda thought that their prime target audience would be men with silver coloured hair, they were stunned when all of the kids starting buying the car. :confused:

im gonna agree with you i knew the 8 was comeing out but i couldnt wait. im 22 and if it was out when i bought mine i would have gone with the 8 but i ordered my car 4 months in advance so ive had it over a year now

Well. I wasn't talking about age groups per se, I was talking about the type of person (and it is a huge generalization). Sure, there are some "youngsters" buying stooks, and even some of them want to add body-kits (how come I didn't have that kind of money at that age? ;) ), but they are a small minority.

Although I expect there to be some people buying the RX8 with the intention to customize it, the majority of the buyers will probably not be going as far as to add body kits. Meanwhile, the portion of people buying the RSX who intend on adding body kits is much greater (I would think, anyway). So my point was that the market will be bigger for the RSX, so there will be more companies with more options more quickly than with the RSX.

Okay I guess I'm a "youngster" but the market for body kits is not only proliferated by us youngsters. For example, look at the new Acura TL with twin pipes and a body kit... all stock. Look too a major figure in the luxury auto market, Mercedes Benz, in the past their cars were mundane to say the least but now look, all the models, C-class through the S-class they all have integrated body kits and those cars are definitely marketed at middle age upper-middle to upper class people. So to say that body kits are only for youngsters is a definite generalization.

Certainly, it is very much a generalization. I'm not saying you have to be a certain age or a certain kind of person to want a custom job, nor am I saying that noone would want to do such with the RX-8. It's just a big stereotype I'm using right now in the interest of simplicity.

What we've been talking about are aftermarket body kits. Totally custom jobs, nuthin' stock about it. We weren't talking about cars with spoilers, skirts, air dams, etc. added by the factory as part of the car's design.

Okay, so just because they have integrated the styling of a body kit because there is a HUGE market for those items, it automatically isn't considered to be a body kit, that's definitely arguable but it still embodies everything that a body kit is. I can tell you from experience in the auto market that the design components of body kits are along the same lines as enhanced body design on newer cars...which simply integrate body kit disign, thus, making them stock. So, although you may not want to except the fact that body kits are mainstream..don't fool yourself, it may be stock but whether it comes with your car or you buy it later the design aspect is derived from the same place...FACT.

We aren't arguing that. We are just saying that we are talking about the availability of custom body kits that we get from places like Stillen, Erubuni, etc. The kind of stuff you'd find at places like Nopi.com, as opposed to something that comes from the factory (whether it's considered a "body kit" or not).

I seen on autoweek today that PRO DRIVE has signed a deal with Mazda to develope a car (they did not specify what type) to most likely race at le mans sometime in the future. They speculated a new prototype and refered to the 787b but also talked of a GT class car to compete against porsche and their GT3's so if anyone out their is listening please make a RX-8R to spank those damn Germans.

That's fair, I don't want to sound hurt because I actually like body kits but I can understand those who are coming from the other side of the coin. I have 77' Martini Porsche that is devoid of any form of body moldings and I must say that I wouldn't touch the exterior for any amount of money.

because most companies like Wings West and Stillen etc. use show cars to promote their product, i'm sure they'd come up with SOMETHING for this car... i can't remember where, but i think it was on tv that a comment was made about how wicked a show car the RX-8 will be, mostly because of the doors, and partially because of the engine... it already looks hot, i wouldn't touch it. it's no instant classic (like the FD3S), but it's one helluva car... interesting someone should point out the S2000 and the youth crowd embracing it so... the 8 is cooler, i think it'll blow thier socks off!! (i'm sure not too much noise is being made in that crowd yet... anybody seen anything on the magazine webpages like for Sport Compact or whatever??i'm not really into that...)

I haven't seen squat in the pages of SCC about it.

I Martini Porsche is a special edition 942 released in 1977 with a total production of 500 cars. The edition celebrated the Porsche Martini racing heritage in addition to the 924 being the first front engine rear whell drive car for Porsche. The car came stock with a martini racing stripe, white body-color rims, large sway bars, and a lowered and stiffened suspension. The car isn't that fast but it's a blast to drive.

Look at those wheels,they match perfectly. Having that type of setup on the streets could mean peices of the kit everywhere lol. On of the best, if not, the best drift looking 8's out there.

After looking at those pics of Mad Mike's 8, you should design up some taillight eyelids! I never thought of that, but there might be a cool look there (not his, but an angled angry look) BTW, I think that 4-rotor drift monster is for sale.... $37k is what I heard but i haven't looked it up :)

^^^ yeah I could do that need something to do in the next couple hrs anyway, raining outside whick is preventing me from building my rear diffuser,,,,
