UK EVO Magazine March 2003

Having just read the not to impressive CAR magazine review today, I arrived home and found my EVO mag on the doormat.

Very good review indeed. A few tasters:

"The performance is right on the money...the chassis balance is as near perfect as you'll ever experience"

"Much more of a drivers car that the audi TT"

"The best gearchange you'll ever experience in a roadcar"

"The sttering is an utter delight thanks to the lack of weight up front"

"If your idea of the perfect car is an affordable, beautifully balanced, rear wheel drive, normally aspirated performance car, then the Mazda RX8 should go straight to the top of your shopping list"

All from the UKs No 1 performance car mag.

I'' try to post up the full article soon, if someone doesnt beat me to it.

Mine arrived too.

Great article from "the daddy" of Uk performance car magazines.

If it's good enough for EVO, I'll have two!

I've emailed it to Herc to reduce and post here hopefully

Rock on July/August

Hercules 02-06-2003 02:48 PM

I'll have the article posted when I get home.. currently at school but I was browsing to see what's up here :)

Revhappy

This is brand new and hot off the press!

It's not on their website yet. Herc will post later.

Thanks

Cool...I value the opinions of your mags over there...much more attentive to detail than ours.

Hercules 02-06-2003 05:23 PM

As promised... (got home 2 minutes ago hehe)

Thanks Herc, just can't seem to make the file size small enough.

Hope you enjoyed it anyway, it's certainly a positive article from a "top" magazine and I value their views (subscriber of course!).

Two things I'll point out from this article that I liked:

0-60: 6 seconds (Claimed)
Curb Weight: 1300kg (or for us Americans, 2866lbs!)

Figure on the dash to 60, if it's claimed 6 seconds.. it's probably claimed by Mazda. So that puts it in good company. Curb weight has come down from the 2970lbs we've seen a lot of, and there's no 'estimated' next to that, so perhaps it is closer to reality?

Anyhoo I was happy about the article, thought it conveyed most of what the other articles have.. but since this is the closest pre-production drive by a very reputable magazine, it says a lot about the car.

Now that is a review. Seems to me that they had nothing but praise for RX-8 and that says a lot coming from EVO. The more I hear the more I like....

"Those people brave enough to be ordering now are in for a treat":p :p

Wow, that article from EVO has be almost burting with pride about my new car purchase. Truth be told, I would rather the RX-8 receive praise from the likes of EVO, CAR, and Top Gear than any american publication. I enjoy reading Car and Driver and Automobile, but I cant look at the British mags in the same day as the American ones. It makes the American mags look like rags (hey that rhymes :D ). Reading the British articles are like reading a witty story, whilst American reports are like 7-th grade reports on a "car."

"Brave"?

Those of us "Brave enough" are those who know the Rotary legend and likely have experienced it in person. As for myself, I'm feeling "antsy", not "brave" as I've had my deposit down since January of 2002! "anticipating excitement" might be a better term than "Brave".

The two best items (for me):

1. The best gearchange you'll ever experience in a roadcar (I assume EVO have much experience with Miata MX5 and S2000)

2. The steering is an utter delight thanks to the lack of weight up front (I expected no less, although some say that electric assisted steering mutes feedback a little in cars like the S2000)

Being from the UK (6 years back) and now living in the USA I completely agree with the statement:
"Reading the British articles are like reading a witty story, whilst American reports are like 7-th grade reports on a "car.""
I still try to pick up CAR and Top Gear from Borders occasionally at $8 a pop. When reading Anthony Ffrench Constant or Clarkson or LJK etc you know who is the author just from the style.

Much more of a drivers car than the Audi TT!

YES, Rock and Roll on Summer

I'm dribbling in anticipation!

Being from the UK (6 years back) and now living in the USA I completely agree with the statement:
First issue of CAR that I read I was astonished by the quality of the magazine. Only afterwards did I realize there was no real data. Instead there are real opinions from people who don't mince words. If Clarkson thinks a car stinks, he says it stinks, period. As seen in the new issue where he slams the new RR. He says that foreign dignitaties will laugh at you if you show up in that... ouch.

on first aquaintence you might feel that it needs more power but that's simply down to the Wankel's power curve being so linear it fools you into thinking there's not much going on.
:D :D :D
