RX8 Banned in Europe
From TTAC
Thanks to its rev-happy rotary engine’s inability to pass the Euro-5 emissions standard, the Mazda RX-8 will be pulled from the European market, reports Auto Motor & Sport Sweden [via Google Translate]. A rotary-engined replacement will not arrive before the year 2013, as development of the unique engine is both costly and time-consuming. Like any good car with an environmental problem, the RX-8 is receiving a few tentative test upgrades. An E85 version is being raced at the Targa Tasmania, but likely won’t ever be available for sale. Meanwhile, Mazda’s RX-8 rehabilitation efforts likely come down to making a long-rumored hydrogen rotary engine version production-ready. And with nothing planned before 2013, it’s looking like Europe will have to do without the uniquely rev-happy, hard-handling, performance bargain that is the RX-8 for some time. |

same. |
well its strange since Euro- 5 emissions standards came in to effect for 2009. so why do they not pass 2 years later?
Anyway TTAC is not reporting it- they are reporting on the report by the Swedes which is in turn a report of a German report which states they talked to the head of Mazda Germany bUUUUTTT Mazda themselves have not commented on that report. I emailed my friend Mark Rechtin who works for Automotive News in Europe to see what he's heard. He always knows whats going on with Mazda. |
Damn!
|
ouch maybe this is what will happen in the us!
|
This would only be for new sales and not existing RX8s?
|
I dunno if the 16x will ever see the production line. :(
|
R3 is becoming a quite rare car in EU spec.....interesting for collectors in perspective.
|
al gore climategate strkes again. the world is melting, let's ban all cars!
for crying out loud, the earth at one time was much hotter, how do you think the oil fields under the alaska tundra were created? oil fields come from jungles. the earth at one time was much colder, as north america was covered with a glacier, which receded faaaaar before our technology was beyond wood and fire. bunch of enviro hype i'm all for preserving our planet but it's going to get out of hand... |
Felix Wankel would protest if he was still alive......
|
:( :(
|
..............not before 2013 ?
Now that's an ouch. |
Darn tree huggers..... at least the value of existing Rx8s will probably increase due to them being rare?
|
its a sad day for rotor lovers overseas
but those piston heads can finally breathe a sigh of relief |
Yes. . . banning the RX8 . . . an already slow seller globally will have a measurable impact on the regional quality of air.
Rules is rules I guess... |

The worst thing is I'm starting to worry the 16x will never make it. |
What a shame, and for nothing, since global warming is a sham.
|
Lots of €4 cars still being sold here, smells like BS.
The truth is that mazda europe screwed up with the after sale service and is losing a LOT of money on each rx8. Considering that they don't change the coils but swap an engine under warranty you can pretty much see why they went broke :) |
